Default Looking for tires....

According to Discount Tire Direct http://www.discounttiredirect.com the OE tire size for my 1992 XJS V12 coupe is 235/60-15. Listed as an optional size is among other recommendations is 215/70R15 that are presently mounted. Car has the OE lattice wheels, I'm planning on keeping those on the car. Kinda wondering what others are running on their cars and why. At the present, I'm leaning toward the 215s because the 235s on Discount Tire Direct seem to be raised white letters. Really looking for Blackwalls and I hate it when you make a turn with RWL tires mounted with the letters inside and can see the letters under the car, plus the 215s look to be a little less expensive. I've never used Discount Tire Direct, would like to hear if others have any experience with them or recommendations of other sources for tires. Thanks,

howlinowl

I've used both Discount Tire and TireRack with no problems. Good service.

As for the tires themselves, well....very, very few choices nowadays in either of the sizes you mention.

If you want a performance tire (do you?) you'll probably have to go with 225/60x15 or perhaps 215/65x15.

I used 225/60 BFG Touring TA on my XJS...no problems. This was a V-rated all season performance tire...but I think it's been discontinued.

I'm not aware of *any* performance/V-rated tires in the 215/70x15 size these days. Maybe the Pirelli P4000 is still available...not sure.

Cheers

Thanks for the replys.

sidescrollin: Are those the tires on your XJS in your profile album? 15 inch wheels? If so, those just might work out. I'll keep them in mind.

Yes. They are Falken Ziex 912s 225/60r15 96H which are only 130mph (H) but im not planning on needing the V rating anyway so whatever.

Would have gone wider but I was on a budget...i got my car with the original tires. Anyways I like them a lot and they cost me $81 a tire plus i got buy 3 get 4th free

Think I've narrowed my choice down to two..... Both are Kuhmo.

First choice:
Kumho Ecsta ASX
Kumho Ecsta ASX

Second choice:
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum

(hope these links work)

Both are "V" rated in 225-60-15 size. The second set (Ecsta LX Platinum) are listed as "Grand Touring All-Season" while the first set (Ecsta ASX) are listed as "Ultra High Performance All-Season.

Looking for opinions from folks as to which to buy and why. Never purchased Kumho tires before, are they any good? Since I'm probably looking into installing swaybars and urethane bushings at some point in the future (wondering if Addco has swaybars??) which would be the better choice?

Thanks in advance,
howlinowl

I don't think you will be unhappy with the Kumho's, I love them. I went from Bridgestone to Kumho on my AMG and the difference certainly surprised me. Not much difference in the dry but wet weather grip was far superior. They were KU31's

I had some work done on my 94 6cyl this week. Throttle Position sensor getting oil in it..still trying to find where the oil is coming from..but my question is about tires. I bought this car in June, and noticed the tires had some cracks, and planned to replace soon. The service guys saw them and told me they dated back to 1999..SO, gettin them replaced NOW.
They are 235/60/R15 Goodyear Eagle GT2 98 S. I noticed most of you all use the 225's. Are 235's too big? Also seeing Kumho, and other brands I'm not familiar with. When I go to sell it does anyone care about the tire brand? Would like to save some money too.
I only drive on weekends, and short trips around the state.

We've had two set of Kumohs on my son's Firebird and they've been good tires. Discount tire could not find a set of the Platinums in the size needed for my 86 and they also were not the right load rating if I'm not mistaken. I opted for Good Year Assurance Touring 215/70. The other choice was the Dunlop Signature II which my friend runs on his E-Type Series III in a 205/70...both come in 215/70 and both are the right load rating + readily available at Discount Tire. I did have them put Perelli P40's on it for a day...they looked "horrid" IMHO.

Jaguar used 235/60x15 on the XJS for several years. No, not too big.

The reason so many go to the 225/60x15 is because there are so few choices nowadays in the 235/60x15 size.

I sorta doubt it. More often the concern is whether or not the tires require immediate replacement.

Speaking for myself, tires are a consumable item. It wouldn't make-or-break a purchase decision or significantly alter the value of the car.

If I buy a used car and don't like the tires I'll simply replace them with something I like. Considering the expense involved I'd have to be pretty darn unhappy with the existing tires before I'd replace them, assuming thay had usable service life remaining. But, there have been times where I've done so.

Would like to save some money too.

If you're not overly fussy about the attributes of any given tire (traction, steering response, tread life, noise, speed rating, etc) then your decision is easier. There are many tires that will be satisfactory for mild/moderate driving.

Cheers

Check these guys out on EBay.....they have great tires at a great price. I bought 4 replacement perrellis Pzero (245/50s) for $600.00, I stole them for less than half price. Very fast shipping as well 17 Tires, 16 Tires items in TIRENET-USA store on eBay!

No offense intended but one of the biggest reasons I buy tires from discount tires is service after the sell...IMHO it is second to NONE. I buy ton's of stuff on ebay but I'm not going there with tires...I put the P40's on at discount and a day later drove in and said "no thanks" they politly and w/o question took them off and mounted up several others to see how'd they would look on the car. They did the same for me on my Lincoln LS when I ddn't like the ride of what we put on it....I can't get that kind of service on e-bay.

I love Kumho's - replaced the Bridgestone's on my AMG with Kumho KU31's. These were light years ahead of the Bridgestones, mostly noticeable in wet weather grip, but were better on the track in the dry as well.

I wanted to share a recent experience with Discount Tire Direct. The last couple of months have been a perfect tire storm for me. My wife, my daughter and my XJS all needed tires at the same time. I bought sets for my wife and daughter from DTD's website. They had the best prices I found and their service was excellent. Allegedly, UPS lost a pair of my wife's tires, and DTD shipped another pair out immediately. Very happy with the service.

I then ordered a set of 225/60-15s for the XJS, again on-line from DTD. Part of check out is filling in car information. A couple of day's later, I got a call from DTD telling me that the tires I ordered were the wrong size for my car (I knew that) and they didn't carry the proper load rating (96 vs. 97 minimum for the Jag). They would not sell the tires to me. They cancelled my order and refunded my money.

After searching, I haven't been able to find a 225/60-15 with the appropriate load rating, but I know lots of people run them on XJSs. I've since ordered the same tires from another source (I didn't fill in vehicle information this time ), but I was wondering if anyone has had trouble using this tire size on their jag.

I went through the same thing looking for tires for my 93 convertible. I ended up buying from Tire Rack (we have one locally) I too was concerned about the load rating,it is a heavy car. The salesman at the front desk was very helpfull. He looked up the minimum load capacity for the XJS and it was around 1470 per tire, this was figured on 800 lbs of passengers and luggage. Now all of the XJS's wether they are 4 passenger coupes or 2 passenger convertibles and 6 or 12 cyl.engines all took the same size 15" tire, so there is some leeway.
I ended up buying Kumo Platinums 225-60 15, they have a nice ride are high speed rated and had received good reviews @ TireRack.com .I actually prefer the look of the narrower sidewall it doesn't look so much like a truck tire. From what I had found, tire load capacity is based on size and not brand of tire.
The load capacity of the Kumo's is around 1570 lbs per tire. I carry a passenger occasionally but hardly any luggage, so I figure I am within specs.

Hey there, I've used a set of Khumos, they were K31 irc and they actuallu came with a set of alloys I bought.

Here in the UK, with all year round sun, rain, snow, wind and sun every other day, you really ned a good all round tyre.
My tyres of choice have always been continental, Bridgestone or Pirelli, so I was a little apprehensive.

The Khumos were a great tyre, lasted well and offered good traction, road noise and wet grip capability.

Suffice to say I would use them again

Please bear in mind we have forum sponsors here for tyres........worthwhile checking them out and advising them you're a forum member

Good luck

I've 96 load Falkens on mine I think they are 1550 a corner . I' d worry about 98 load if it were my explorer I was planning on loading down with cargo and 6 passengers. I also like Kuhmo's and have had them on three vehicles and almost went with the LX Platinums on my X J S but I really like the side wall protector profile of the Falken 512. It is only an H where I think the LX is a "V". Maybe next time.
