Loss of Car Keys saved me from an almost Certain Disaster! (XJS V12)
Having recently purchased Two Brand New Tires for my XJS V12, I had been meaning to put them on but having planned a few trips out while the sun was shining.
That job was about to be put on the back burner, or at least it would have been, had I not lost my Car Keys, which I thought may have fallen out of my pocket while I was underneath the Car looking for the Oil Filter.
When I suddenly saw them laying on the ground, by the side of the (UK) offside road wheel. Then as I knelt down to pick them up, I noticed the Tire had quite a few splits (which I never noticed before)
That left me in no doubt at all that it was all ready and waiting to blow out!
needless to say I didn't waste time in putting the new tires on and as such was lucky 'The Jaguar Gods decided to come to my rescue!'

It could have been fatal never mind bad!
So glad I followed 'Grants' advice (do it once and do it right!) even though it cost me £400!

OB,
It's an unfortunate fact that with many owners doing less annual mileage in their classic cars, tyres are more likely to need replacing through UV degradation and general age deterioration than they are through mileage covered. This can be mitigated to some degree by using tyre cleaners and dressings which can give some UV protection.
With your large fleet of cars, it seems that this would be the ideal time to go and check all of the tyres for age deterioration, sidewall cracks etc. And don't forget to look on the inside wall of the tyre. Although most UV damage happens on the outer wall, the inner tyre wall could also have age cracks.

OB, we used to call these cracks Weather Checks. They're quite common on (implement) tires that never see the inside of a shed after they're bought.
You caught that one Just in Time! You were very near to becoming another auto mishap statistic!

All the Tyres on my Fleet are well and truly 'knackered', except for the Celebration One, that uses a different size and also has different Wheels, or I would have swopped one over from one of my other Cars.
So in order to not live dangerously, I had to get out the 'Plastic' to the tune of £400! which makes a bit of a change from buying 'Petrol!'
That could have been an auto mishap statistic X 2!
So not much choice but to get out the 'Plastic' and buy myself some new tyres/tires.
And now I need some for the Merc!
