Default Lower Ball Joint Torque

Finishing the rebuild of my front end and can't find the torque for the four bolts on that fix the lower ball joint to the stub axle carrier. Anyone have that spec?

Cheers,
John

I can't find it in the manual, but most torque charts show a range of between 47-55 ft/lbs for a clean lubricated 1/2" - 20 fine thread grade 8 bolt. I just did this on mine and torqued them all to 50 ft lbs.

Missed this subject earlier....although I don't have anything to add anyway. I don't recall ever seeing a spec for b/joint torque....there certainly must be one..."somewhere".

That said.....

I just select a medium-ish setting on my impact and give 'em a good blast :-).

[gasps from the audience]

I'm guessing it results in about 75-100 ft-lbs.

[shrug]

I'm not condoning my nonchalant method .... but I've never had one fall out :-)

Cheers

Oops! you were asking about the lower four bolts, not the big one.

I torqued the lowers to 20 ft/lbs. Sounds low, but that's about the same setting as is specified for a similar sized rod bolt.

Oh, boy, I really mis-read that one. I saw "BALL JOINT" and thought we were talking about the big nut. Bad on me.

For god sakes don't use an impact on the 4 small bolts.

Yeah, 20 lbs or so oughta do it

Cheers

Thanks! I figured it was going to be about 20-25 ft/lbs for some Grade 8 bolts. Strange that torque setting is MIA.
