Default Need insight on this XJS.

Hi folks,

What do you think of this car? It has odd vents and badges on it. Are they aftermarket, or is it some kind of special addition?

Thanks

Add-on/aftermarket. Not factory installed.

Aftermarket and hopefully removable. Maybe he has the original wheels too

Yeah I'm not crazy about the wheels myself. Overall though, is the year/engine a good one when looking at these cars?

i like it. if it runs good for 3500 and doesnt have any rust, i would pick it up, debadge it, and throw some proper slash cut pipes on it.

I love badly painted tyres, they add character.
I would take it for a test drive first and try and get someone who knows about these cars to go with you.
I'm available and I love BC but you'll have to pay for my flights!

1. check for bondo, if it has any mud in it, RUN! Canadian XJS is a scary thought, especially 28 y/o.
2. Make sure these chinese badges are removable without paint damage, if not, knock off $1500 right there. Idiot has got to pay for labeling semi-classic car with children's plastic.
3. Check engine temperature being stable at all modes and make sure oil pressure does not go below 20 psi, even at hot idle.
4. Pull up as much carpeting as you can and dig deep.

Tyres? Am I missing something? (Other than the spelling?)

XJSs of this vintage are fundamentally very much alike. Many small changes over the years but the basics are all the same. A "good one" or "bad one" is MUCH more dependant on how the car has been treated than any particular model year.

There's a buyer's guide in one of the sticky threads at the top of this section. It might be useful to you

Cheers

PS- Guess I'm odd man out on the wheels. I kinda like 'em :-). Handsome looking, not glitzy or fru-fru :-)

I think Steve was referring to the "Ultra High Gloss Super Wet Look" tire dressing that was obviously applied with a mop :-)

Indeed :-)

And I always sorta shake my head at people who won't even vacuum the carpets before taking pics!

Absolutely, that stuff looks like it is impervious to infra red and neutrinos.

I think he just hosed it down to get the dust off and took pictures right away.
I don't like the badges or wheels and I blow hot and cold on whether I want an XJS anyway.

It's proximity to my house, and the price caught my eye.

They're not for everybody :-). They can be a bit of a challenge but also very satisfying. A properly sorted-out example is a dream to drive.

BTW, no offense intended when I say I'm not sure about wanting an XJS. I have always wanted a V12, and sometime a coupe tempts me.

I have never driven one though, and may be I should just to see if it grabs me.

No offense taken....not by me, at least !

Good idea. But make your decision based on a good example, not a crummy one. There are many more of the latter than the former, unfortunately.

If it runs okay and does not have rust and you have deep poskets, go for it. Fun project and isn't that what most of us want?
