Default New XJS member with some questions

Hi guys.

just introduced myself in the new member area and thought I'd drop in here.

just bought an '85 XJ-S. love it.

Seems to be in really good condition but there's a few minor things to do in order that my OCD stays under control.

the drivers door closes and latches properly but sits out from the body at the rear of the door by about 10 mm. The horizontal alignment is fine though. Ie the pinstripes line up and the door doesn't appear to drop. I'm assuming if I loosen the striker plate on the B pillar and move it inboard by 10mm this will be resolved or am I missing something.

Also the gear selector surround has cracked on the thinnest section. See image below of the selector surround It's only a fine crack and being on the very narrow section is hardly noticeable but I'd like to replace this part. Where do you guys source these parts from in Australia or do you get them overseas? The part number is CAC4768. Is this cracking a common fault? My car has the TH 700 4 speed to replace the factory GM400 3 speed and I wondered if the selector on this other gearbox puts strain on the surround.

finally I've attached a photo of the car for you to drool over too.

Definitely a beautiful Jag! Adjusting the hinge is what I did to remedy the same situation. I'm not sure who might have that shift surround, but I'm sure its out there.

Played around with the striker plate today and door sits much better now. Just need to find gear selector surround now.

As the years go by we'll be seeing more and more cracked originals.....and fewer and fewer good or new replacements. I need one as well; am keeping my eyes peeled.

Here in the 'States a lot of us depend on David Boger......

Everyday XJ

....for good used parts and the occasional new-n-box gem. Might be worth a try.

Cheers

Earlier XJSs used the same shift indicator plate. These earlier (pre January 1987) XJSs are not acknowledged by Jaguar Classic Parts, oddly.

To broaden your chances of success you might consider the shift indicator plate from a Series III XJ6. It should fit Ok.....but the P-R-N-D-2-1 designations are spaced a bit differently so the gear lever won't line up quite right to the numbers/letters. If you can tolerate that discrepancy (who really looks?) you might be more likely to find a good replacement.

At one supplier still shows the shift plate.....

Welsh Enterprises, Inc - Jaguar Semi Annual Sale Interior Fittings / Trim Parts - Shifter ID Plate - XJS 82-87

....but I'd contact them first to verify inventory before sending money!

I can’t vouch for the parts Welsch is selling now, but I bought one from them that was correct.

The little brushes, however, are like hens teeth. Found a set NOS for $30 USD. I know it’s not a bad price, but still haven’t ordered them.
