Noisy fuel pump - 94 4.0
Greetings from Seattle, Washington.
The fuel pump in my 94 4.0 is pretty noisy. I can easily hear it inside the cabin when the car is idling. When Im driving on the road, I dont notice it. Is this normal? Should I be able to hear it inside the cabin? The last thing I want to do is have to replace a fuel pump inside the gas tank.

Hi Danny
Yes that's right!
The last thing you ever want to do is replace an In-Tank Fuel Pump on an XJS as it's the 'Job from Hell'
Though having said that, Fuel Pumps don't last forever, so someones got to do it, or else pay someone Megabucks to do that job for you! $2000-$5000
Mostly Labor (it could take a 'Shop' a Couple of Days!)

I know it’s not easy to replace, but I don’t want to do it just because I can hear it running (if it’s normal). The fuel pump in my XJ6 is also noisy and it’s been noisy since I replaced it a few years ago. I can hear that one from inside the cabin, too. I replaced that fuel pump proactively and it’s not any quieter than the old one was.
I just want to know if others can also hear their fuel pumps from inside the cabin. Is it normal?

I have a slightly newer car, and I never hear the fuel pump in the car.
There is a way to replace it without removing the tank. Apparently you should be able to shimmy that tank out just far enough without having to pull it out entirely. It apparently can be done.
I think it's a job coming your way very soon.

Danny,
I've never heard my fuel pump from inside the car.
Possibly a naive question as you obviously have Jaguar experience, but it's definitely the fuel pump you can hear and not the brake accumulator pump in the engine bay?
There's a few videos and pics around showing how the pump can be extracted apparently relatively easy, wiggling the right hand side of the tank to the back of the car.

Yes, it’s definitely the fuel pump. The sound is coming from the rear. It actually sounds exactly like my fuel pump in my Series III XJ6, which is new. Well, it was new a few years ago and was/is as noisy as the fuel pump I replaced.
Thank you for suggesting the videos on replacing the fuel pump. That’s good to know they’re online. I’ve read the tank can be accessed by wiggling it back a little rather than removing it. The first thing I’ll do is replace the fuel filter and see if that quiets down the pump. I’m hoping…

I believe the best hoses you can get are the Gates Barricade hoses. Somewhere there will be a post indicating what kind of size, and the length needed...I hope.
These hoses are priced by the inch, so they are not cheap.
As far as fuel pumps go, I think any name brand would be the wise decision. Walbro makes pumps for other brands as well. Denso is usually pretty reliable. Delphi, AC Delco would be good too.
I would basically buy one of the more expensive pumps here. You don't want to be cheap here.
