Default Non working windshield wipers

Ok guys, still sorting out my 89 XJS convertible. The windshield wipers don't come on. Checked the fuse, took the motor out, and it will run, if I hook it directly to a battery. It looks great inside. I can even get power at the connection in the well. One post has 12V all the time, another gets power when turned to the first position.

How do I go about testing the wiper switch? As I said, there is power going to the connector in the well, and the motor runs when I wire it directly, but nothing when I plug it in. Its like its not getting ground maybe. Although I checked that as well with my digital volt meter, and found that two of the smaller posts were grounded.

Just had a quick scan of the wiring diagram. Looks like you should have 12v on pin 1 of the motor connector when the system is off. This signal should go to ground she the wipers are switched on.

You should have 0v on pins 3 and 5 with the wipers off and 12v when switched on. (pin 5 to 12v when slow speed is selected, pin 3 to 12v when high speed selected)

There is also a park/run switch in the motor assembly. Check that you have continuity between pins 1 and 2 when the wipers are off and between 2 and 4 when they are on.

I have power to the lower left large pin when the switch is off. When I turn it to the first position, low?, I get power to the pin right above it. But the motor doesn't run. Yet, when I connect my battery charger to the motor, the wiper motor runs fine.

This thread has me confused. You state you have power and ground but the tested motor doesn't work.

Since that isn't possible, are you sure you are checking the right places? Can you backprobe it at all?

Ok, back to this problem. I have tested all I know to, and would like a little help again. Alan, when you say pin #1, and then tell me how it should read on the other pins, how exactly are they numbered? I can get the power on that one pin when the wiper switch is turned off, and I get power to another pin when the wiper switch is switched on, but that's it. Nothing happens in position 2, or when I put the switch down to intermittent. Surprisingly, the washers do work, but still nothing when trying to get the wipers to work.

Have you checked the fuse? It might be on the way out and allowing enough volts through to get a reading but not enough amps to turn the motor. Just a thought.

checked the fuse. I actually get power to the post that makes it park, as well as power that makes it turn on. On one speed anyway. When the stalk switch is turned on, the one post looses power, and another gets power. But when I go up to the next speed, nothing changes. This shouldn't be hard, as the diagram appears straight forward. I just don't know how to identify the posts according to their number on the diagram. There are 4 larger posts, and 4 smaller ones. It would be easy to say that the post that gets the power during park, is number 1, but what then? there are two rows. Thanks guys!

Back again. I study the wiring diagram, and there is a broken dotted line between the motor "run" position and the motor itself. The only other place I see this, is when there is a coil, and the relay position changes, if that makes sense. Anyway, it would appear that this "may" be my problem. If there is no power? ground? going to that position, can the motor run? Any help appreciated. Like I say, I can take the assembly out of the car, ground the motor, and then apply power on the posts on the pigtail, and get the motor to run.

It's a bit hard to visualise; I'm away until Wednesday but I do have a complete unit out of a car so I could have a play with that and see what happens.

Hey guys, reporting on another mystery solved. After tracking back to the switch, and finding that I had power coming in, I felt for sure it was my switch. Took it out, ohmed it out, and it seemed to function perfectly. However, when plugged in, I could turn it on, and the incoming power would go away. Turn it off, and the power was back. I have had a problem with the fuse panel under the dash, but checking the power on the wiper fuse, I had power both sides. Crazy. What I finally figured out, that I was getting so little connection, that the slight amp load that occurred when I turned it on, was just enough to cause the power to go away. Took the fuse out, the spades out of the fuse block, crimped them a little, put a little dielectric grease on it, and the job was done. Tell me again why we own these cars?

We own these cars because we must like fixing stuff. More relays than a pin ball machine. In closing, my wipers have quit working. The fun begins.
