Default Oil Filter question

I've owned and worked on XJS's for over 20 years now and have installed all makes of oil filters in them. Last month I bought some surplus parts from a former Jag parts place and it came with a few oil filters. This was good since my 90 was due for a change so I get the oil, decide to prefill the filter when I noticed that the inner "core" of the filter was solid. EVERY other filter I have ever seen in my life has perforated core. Has anyone else ever see this before? The filter is a Sure Filter SFO 381. I emailed the company but have not gotten a response in over 3 weeks. Safe to say, I did not install it and went with another Bosch I had in stock. Interested

to hear the feedback

Interesting - if you don't mind sacrificing one - I would pour oil down the little holes (not the centre one) and see if oil gets through to the centre hole.

From my understanding - hot oil is returned to the filter through the little holes on top, and the oil pump takes it out of the centre.

I have not seen this configuration either

Cheers
Steve

You're going to have to slice that thing open so we can all see the design!

Peculiar indeed!

The company's website mentions a spiral perforating tube designed to prevent the element from collapsing... I wonder if they forgot to perforate the tubes in your filters?

"A Sure Filter® oil filter has a steel tension spring that has been designed with a heat treatment process that helps it maintain the stability of tension between the element and the canister. The spiral perforating tube is designed to prevent the element from collapsing and provides better flow."

The website also discloses that Sure Filters are manufactured at two locations in Indonesia:

Personally, I mostly use filters by Mann, a longtime OEM to Jaguar. Their filters are designed with both a non-return valve to keep the filter full and a bypass valve to allow oil to flow even if the filter becomes obstructed, and they are affordable. Right now, Rock Auto has a wholesaler closeout on the Mann 7197 (719/7) filter that fits lots of Jags from 1976 to 2009, at just $4.40 each plus tax and shipping, so it's a good time to stock up.

Cheers,

Don

Oddly enough it's not the 930/13 size that I have always bought.

It looks to be smaller in size than the Mann Filters I have always bought in the past. I think I stumbled across a similar sale on Amazon a year or two ago and bought myself a six pack for about $30.

I don't know if this is the case here, but there has been a huge proliferation in fake spark plugs, oil filters and other motoring parts in the last 2 years. One of our club members has even bought a fake oil filter that is badged as "Jaguar" and seems identical in all the markings on the outside case. Except, that when cut apart, the internals are quite different from a genuine Jaguar filter.

So, is it possible that this Sure filter is an example of this very worrying trend?
