Default Pinstripe question . Uk cars

Afternoon all, I recently replaced the pinstripes on my 89 convertible after a respray. I took measurements off two other cars still with their original stripes on. The other cars had them 10 mm above the swage line. I’ve copied this but can’t help feel they would look better just above the swage or on the swage. Anyone else any thoughts about this. Uk cars only really as I know the u.s.a ones have different configurations. Thanks in advance.

the blue car shows factory set up. This was also the case on a couple of other cars so I believe this to be correct. I have seen them lower down , closer to the swage. I'm happy enough with how it looks in original guise now I've looked at the photos. Just wondering 🤔

I think just above the swage line as per the factory looks perfect.

And remember there's 4 different types of stripes used over the life of the XJS, with different thicknesses and gaps between them. So different years look slightly different.

Just from personal experience, I like the look of pinstripes just barely above the swage / bodyline as this helps accentuate the body line itself. I have done pinstriping on lots of cars over the years, and I believe they look better a little closer then you have yours. But once again it's one's own personal taste, as to what looks best. I usually will stripe a fender and move the tape several times before I decide exactly where I want the stripe to be. Sort of a form follows function idea. if you get what I mean. Just my thoughts.

I know what you mean. A little closer does look good.

Thanks Greg. Going off subject a little, I’ve had a good drive in her after nearly 7 years of blood sweat and tears lol. Ended up cheating and sent her to Andy Harvey to finnish off for me.( I would highly recommend Andy). Drove around sixty miles home and couldn’t believe it. Fantastic. All those issues melted away and I’m already looking forward to next summer. Only downside was that after all that time in the lock up I got a speeding ticket! 34 mph in a 30. Got my speed awareness course at the end of the month lol. Thanks to all who assisted on the journey so far!!

Brinny,

Well done! No shame in using knowledgeable people! Andy is a good guy, he even owned my pre-HE at one time.

Enjoy the car! (You're going to find some complete f***wits on that awareness course! It will make you despair of some of the drivers on UK roads!)

Badge of honour Brinny! But a decent car can be an advantage in face to face situations: once I was with a friend who had a Bristol, all ready for the ferry at Dover, and had forgotten my passport. As we were only going for lunch to Calais (restaurant Le Channel if you are ever there, one of the best anywhere and not expensive) the guy waved us through on the basis of my American Express card as ID!

Waller,

I assume those are aftermarket stripes? I've never seen stripes positioned there before on an XJS? And the stripes don't seem to be in the Jaguar Parts catalogue ?

ptjs1:
Its how I found it, I was after a Black XJS 4.0- found this one in Florida with 39.5K miles, just out of storage
Appears to have been a "Respray" by previous owner and stripes applied at that time, they are paint-not tape.
Personally, I like the positioning of these stripes better than the typical stripes illustrated above

In the US the Celebrations were delivered without a coachline. The choice was up to the customer.

Pinstripes are a simple way to customize ones car from others of the same make model. In one example, the Trans Am's of the late 70's. Think "Smokey and the Bandit" and the Black 77 Trans Am. It came from the factory with Gold Pinstripes following virtually even body line, and every opening there was on the car. Not to forget the Screamin Chicken on the Hood! That's probably one of the wildest factory pinstripe, and Graphic jobs I can think of. I prefer a more simple, and tasteful following of the natural lines of the vehicle itself. As I said before the idea is to accentuate the body lines. To much, and you loose the beauty of the vehicle, and you end up with a gaudy gook wagon. (Think 77 Trans Am) Just my thoughts.
