Pressure in gas tank???
I have a 1992 XJS and when I go to open the gas tank each time there is an incredible amount of air pressure that is built up in the tank? I have to very slowly open the cap to purge the gas? Surely this cannot be normal, this is regardless if its hot or cold out also?? Just curious is there might be some pressure relieve valve that is stuck or may need to be replaced somewhere? Any feedback is greatly appreciated, and thanks
There was a recall of some models for the fuel tank venting. There is a Rochester valve that controls the venting of the tank through the charcoal canister. If these fail, and they are known to fail, you will have this problem. Time to troubleshoot the vapor recovery system. This is not good for the fuel tank.
Are you sure that it is pressurized and not de-pressurized? When I open my fuel filler I also get a whooshing noise but the tank is drawing air in not vapoue out, due to blocked vent pipes I am guessing.

Fuel vent system seems notoriously faulty on the XJ-S.
Another symptom is if you hear a bang from the trunk occasionally a few minutes after startup. This is due to the tank crumpling after being pressurized while shutdown.
