Propshaft Installed Backwards
The transmission was rebuilt, the propshaft was removed for new universal joints and balancing. When I received the car back, the propshaft with the splines and gator on the end was installed towards the front of the car. According to the service training book the XJS is to have the short spline piece with the gator are to be towards the back of the car is this correct? If the propshaft was installed backwards from the service book, would this cause an issue with the balancing and banging of the shaft? The gator is also to have two rubber rings at the end of the gator. Is one ring to be installed inside the gator and one on the outside of the gator to keep the dirt out? The transmission company also strapped the small part of the gator on to the splined shaft. I don't think the propshaft can move in and out with the strap on the spline. Shouldn't the large end of the gator be strapped to the large outer shaft? any recommendations for greasing the spline propshaft and the rear wheel hub spline?
Far as I know the rear hub splines only get lubrication when assembled they don't move once bolted up. If I recall my propshaft it has a zert fitting on it for a grease gun, usually lives behind the transmission mount and is a pig to get to - nothing is supposed to be strapped to the spline but there is a reduced area on the splines where it should be, then it goes on the yoke - this should be facing the transmission but if the flanges fit I don't know what difference it makes ultimately - convention says the slip yoke goes at the front though I have seen it discussed both ways on Jags.
For me it goes to the front - I follow convention, that's how mine came off, that's how it went back on.

Attached is the service training notes at the location of the expansion joint. A picture of the shaft I received from the transmission co. with the gator clamped to the incorrect end of the joint and a drawing listing the parts to be installed. I do not a zert fitting to grease the shaft. I just realized you are talking about the half shaft wheel hub drive, and I am talking about the main propshaft between the transmission and the differential.
How to make confusing drawings and bum information should accompany those.
My propshaft was splines to the front, it isn't a high miles car and has not really been meddled with until I cot it, some of those drawings don't exactly clarify which way - other than the page that says splines to the rear - except that is not what the parts books I have infer infer nor the service manual I have which refers to the splines as the front. I honestly don't think it matters that much.
Only thing I picked up from reading the book is that the splined yoke should be assembled and held in compression until fitted.

You are probably correct that it does not matter which end the spline expansion joint is at. If you look at the top picture installation sheet I sent, it shows the early models and sedans had the expansion joint facing towards the front of the car.
