Default XJ12C - prop shaft assembly

Hi
XJ12C -76
I tried to get the propshaft back in the car.without success.
The front small piece is already mounted on the gear box and I thought it would be a simple thing to push the rest in through the rubber sealing and into the splines.
Only got through the sealing but then no further. Couldnt align the parts to slide in somehow...
What am I missing?.
Thanks
Marcus

Marcus I'm confused, are you trying to put the two halves of the driveshaft back together? The slip joint in the middle? Or are you putting the yoke back into the rear tailhousing? I'm sure you know it's important to keep the shaft halves clocked the same as they were before they came apart...

I try to put the slip joint back together.

The front part of the slip joint (including the rubber part) is already mounted on the transmission.

The screwed flanges are marked and will be put back together as they were.

This was the way I disassembled it 5 years ago.... Was it stupid to slide out the shaft through the slip joint?

Sorry, I cannot upload pictures...

I would assemble the entire propshaft out of the car to ensure the slip yoke is correctly assembled, and then put the whole thing from flange to flange in the car. I expect you're fighting the both the splines and rubber boot of the slip joint.

Yes, you would normally unbolt the ends and the center bearing mount and drop the whole thing down, then mark a reference line on the two sections before sliding them apart to assure aligning them back together properly before going back in. If they get misaligned (clocked) you'll get severe vibration. Is your coupe on the road?

Hi, guess you are right. I will remove all and assemble on the floor...
Nope, its not on the road. I think last time it was really on the road was around 2012. In 2018 it was driven a few kilometers to my garage where I started tearing it down.
Six years later it slowly starts to look like a car again

The main issue now is to get the transmission mounting right. See my other post
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...sition-279633/

Anyway, this is what the car looks like at the moment:
