I am interested in re-doing my coach stripe on my XJS.

Any body had any experience doing this?

Can you order them on line?

How much of a bugger is it to install the transfer and how do you go about it?

As always your help is greatly appreciated.

you can still buy original coach lines from Jaguar Heritage, most sets will come in around £200 for genuine Jaguar ones

i managed to do my own and it wasn't too bad

the coach lines all come separately , and a car has a set of 8 decals to apply to individual panels ,

depending on year and spec, the coach lines are slightly different, but basically they are applied just above the swage line on the car

I re-did the coachline myself. The tape is sandwiched with film and backing paper. After peeling off the backing paper, stick the tape and film together on the body, press and rub the film/tape to stick properly, and lastly peel off the film only then the tape is left on the body.
It should have been a quite easy job, but there is one problem which makes the job a bit hard. Some of the stock you can get from Jaguar Heritage are dead stocks. After a long storage the film shrunk and made the tape come off from the film and backing paper in some parts. So you will have to peel off the film to flatten the tape onto the backing paper and redo the film on the tape.

Now the coachline which you can get a set for a whole car is;

sportspack amber/quicksilver
sportspack flame red/pewter

The rear short parts of the front wing isn’t available cheaply on the amber/quicksilver, but you can make them by cutting the one for the door/rear wing.
The parts with part the number starting from BCC/BDC is the old stock, so be carful. The ones with the number from BEC is newer ones and easy to fit.

 

Here in the DC market, which should represent the higher end of the market, I am told you can have coach lines painted on at $200 per side.

It might be worth it to you to have them painted on. Should definitely be worth your while to ask.

 

That is what I have planned for when the car is resprayed. A good hand-drawn coach line (aka pinstripe) is better than those stick on things...

The lines on the later models are painted. But not hand drawn, they are painted with masking tape. Even the masking tape was provided as a genuine part.

 

Note: All Jaguar factory-applied Pin Stripes were taped-on (not painted) and had individual Part Numbers according to their color and car model.

if any are ' painted ' then that have been done after they left the factory , and probably after a repaint

Actually all X300s with the line have painted coachline.

 

well, there we go..

so all apart from the last of the facelift XJS cars have stick on coach lines

and what has this got to do with X300's ?

my XJ8 Sovereign had hand painted coach lines to ?

Oops, sorry for the mistake.
Anyways not all XJS have sticker coachlines as you stated above and some are painted from the factory, which I wanted to talk about.

 

I simply quoted a post from JCNA forum based on the XJS Judges guide up to 1991. A new thread may be in order if one would like to delve deeper in.

 

To answer your original question, yes they can be ordered online and no, they are not a bugger to install. I've stripped many a car and wide painters tape ran lengthwise is your best friend in providing a guide to lay your pinstripe against,

 

My 92 XJS has no stripes. Should it?

 

heh thanks guys for all the responses. Sounds like we got a discussion on our hands.

Im not sure what color mine is supposed to be. My XJS paint job Sapphire Blue Metallic but my coach stripe looks like it was either yellow or gold, hard to tell as it looks like it has been faded.

Does anybody know how to get the correct color for the year?
