Hey, guess what Paul. My brother used to own a panel shop, and I applied many pin stripes to cars he was restoring(in exchange for paint and panel on my cars).
And he comes to visit so we could get him to do it when he is in Brisbane or I could give you a hand if he is not coming soon.
Just another excuse to talk jags and drink beer.

Im not sure what color mine is supposed to be. My XJS paint job Sapphire Blue Metallic but my coach stripe looks like it was either yellow or gold, hard to tell as it looks like it has been faded.

Does anybody know how to get the correct color for the year?

cheers again
I'd rather put that sort of money towards a set of Lattice.

RV and camping outlets that supply trim accessories for RVs, campers, etc. might also be a good place to check out for stripes. I found a website for a supplier in Michigan (Wolverine Retail) that had over 300 different trim pieces for all types to RVs, etc. Had a large selection of striping.

thanks for the input guys

I emailed off to Jag Daim in Melbourne for an inquiry but they hadnt gotten back to me. They were recommended to me but might put my feelers out elsewhere and see where it goes. Definately want to get the original stripes and correct colour.

+1 to BB.
Unfortunately I don't think the exact tape set for you isn't available anymore though.
I think yours is oyster, but check this site;

Coachline Tape-V12 - Parts For XJS from (V)139052 to (V)179736 | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

The oyster tapes are only partly available and won't come in a set.

So the only genuine sets available are the ones for sportpack, like BB and I bought, which are 2 tone stripes.
But they are genuine at least.

Did your car originally have the thicker type of stripe, rather than the thinner more fine sort all the later cars have? The factory changed them over about mid 1985 so it depends on when in that year your car was made. The thicker sort are 'only' about 70 UKP per car from at least a couple of UK specialists.

just another thing to think about .

some coachlines were standard, and some special order, some cars had them , some didnt

so , i dont think there is a wrong set of coach lines you can put on the car ?

its down to taste and specification i suppose

BB?

Have the pin stripes hand painted. Its not original. Its better. Painted lines will not peel.

It is getting harder to find signwriters with hand painting skills still in the trade.
They started using adheasive vinyls in the 80's for almost all sign writing.
Like a lot of trade skills these days, lost to technology. Some trades still have older tradesmen you can find.

I had my plumbing replaced my house recently, the plumber(about 25) and the apprentice could not solder copper pipe. They have a tool that does it for them with connectors.

Sorry guys. Havent been on this post in a while. So I rang up a recommend parts dealer and they told me most people dont go back and re-do the earlier coach stripes. He says they all go for the 1989 pinstripe.

Anybody know what the difference is in designs and colors?

Photos perhaps?

Have any of you guys kept your pinstripe off?

The old one is single tone double stripe, while the 89 on is two tone double stripe like i posted before. The older one is unavailable in a full set anyways as I mentioned before.

Japthug, FYI, 100% accurate old type stripes are available from a couple of specialists in the UK at about 80 UKP a car set.

Professional grade tape won't peel either. After a day in the sun, the only way you'll get it
off is with a grinder.

BTW, I used to fix damaged paint stripes by applying the tape right over the original
stripe. Saved dealerships repainting the whole car when a single panel was damaged.

Still $4.

Thank you for the info Greg, so some vendors still have old stocks.
Sadly we don't see any XJSs which have those types of stripes anymore here in Japan... It seems almost all of them got scrapped.

imo. for what its worth,
it looks so much cleaner, nicer Greg, without the 80s tacky Leyland styling
and more trouble than their worth when carrying out local repairs

Thanks, RGP, I agree, after the respray it did not need anything , I felt. Subsequently, after the pic was taken, I placed one of those stick-on leapers each side, on the wing half way between the wheel arch and the door shut.

Looks great, not too bling, just right.
