Default Recommendations on Engine stand or Cradle?

Hey crew,

Im thinking about purchasing a used V12 engine to rebuild for my XJS.

I will need an engine stand to rest it on while being rebuilt and Im curious if any of you guys have a recommendation on what type of stand fits the V12 best. Or if a DIY stand will be my best alternative.

Thanks!

you would need to make a choice of wether to mount it from the flywheel end or side mount it from the side, either way you need it to rotate so as to be able to work on top or bottom.

a v12 weighs around 700-750 lbs, and most over the counter stands are not very stable at that weight, especially when trying to rotate it over.

a truck engine stand would be great if you can find one!

I have a regular engine stand rated for 750 lbs, I put the engine on it without the intakes and it almost bent in half. It was so unstable I immediately pulled it off. The suggestion of using a truck engine stand is a good one. If you're handy with a welder you certainly can make a good one, I would just suggest you put 4 heavy duty castor wheels on it.

Several years ago I serviced a V-12 and used a heavy duty engine stand. The stand had wide legs - "U" shape 90 degree. Engine was mounted on the flywheel end. I used a jack stand to support the opposite end (front end). The engine wighed 725 LBs and was perfectly stable. Don't use a cheap, light duty stand with the legs in a "V" configuartion.

Default Engine Cradle

Last fall, I was fortunate to find a complete take-out 5.3 drivetrain from a '91 with 114kkms. I have the TH400 separated, sitting on a modified shopping cart lower frame, and will be building a cradle for the heavy V12. I was going to use shopping cart wheels(casters), however the 'innards' of these casters look lightweight. -Just tonight while visiting a friend, I noticed a heavy set of 10" swivel casters, and was told they were from an electric powered hospital bed, rated for 1000 lbs. He gave them to me, and they will be for my next welding / fab project, a sturdy wheeled cradle for the spare engine.

I have a cheaper enginr stand and i use a block and tackle to hold the opposite end over long periods of time. Works fine for me!
