Default Round instruments

Asking for a colleague, if he wants to fit facelift round dial dash in his 88 V12 xjs. Will a 4lt suffice if he changes the rev counter for 5.3LT one or will the ecu compensate.

Does the later instr cluster just drop right into an '88 XJS? Physically, and wring harness connectors?

I believe the 6 cyl tach is easily converted to 12 cyl use via some electronic mods.

I think so Doug, but I believe a couple of warning light
wires neeb to be swapped. I thought he might need a 5.3
rev counter to replace the 4lt one.

A helpful thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...models-177570/

Yes, the tacho will have to be dealt with as it is designed to take the RPM feed from the Marelli A bank coil - essentially making a 6 cyl pulse train (A bank) represent the full 12 cylinders. On a Lucas car it would look as if the RPM was 2X.

Thanks F guy for the link. He has actually purchased a 1991 early 4lt facelift dash and is hoping to retrofit it to an 85 V12 non abs lucas car. So I just advised to plug it in and see what happens.

Attached is a 89 to 94 instrument cluster crossover diagram which should be close to what he wants to do. The wiring is different, so just plugging it in may not be wise.

Thanks for the info Jon, I'll pass it on
But I think I'll tell him not to bother with this a watch out for a Banham dash instead.

Jon,

That's a great doc on the wiring differences, tks! Particularly like the details of the ohm readings fixed vs variable oil pressure sender. I still have the proper variable one in my AJ16 convertible, but one day it will give up and I'll need to replace it.

Greg,

The "Banham" dash was a Paul Banham creation when he was playing with XJ-S modifications in the 80s - the first person I believe to make a round dial conversion for the XJ-S barrel dials setup.

Just to be clear, I did not create the document, just found it some time ago at Jag Lovers. I have not verified its accuracy, but it should be ok.
