Default Speedometer Questions

Trying to fix the speedometer on my '90 XJS. Its working but not correctly.

Two questions;

1. Driving about 40 mph but the speedo is indicating 60 mph. How can I calibrate/adjust?

2. I want to take the dial off but I can not figure out how to remove the needle. I don't think it is just pressed on. How is the needle released from the shaft?

Thanks!

Mark

I cannot answer your question directly, but I would caution that IF you decide to remove the needle off be VERY careful. I suspect it is a push-fit. Most comments I have seen (not on this forum) seem to suggest that it is very easy to **** up the needle.
I was poking around in there myself. I have a speedo showing only kms., and wondered about fitting my son's spare dash which has both miles and kms. But this was a complete switch and not simply the one speedo dial...
Wish I could be more help.

'90 has old style gauges not the same as '92 facelift.. Don't forget that you need a dial that has large KM and smaller MLS. This will keep the total distance correct in KM..
I had a couple of new dial faces made a few years ago as l needed MLS as well as KM. These have outer KM and inner Miles. It wasn't really hard to swop the face over, and it kept the total original....

it pulls off, but you may have to lever it, why take it off? there are so many 2nd hand complete dashes out there, you will probably end up buying one

The problem is not buying a second hand dash, its getting one with KM and MLS on it. They made all MLS dashes with both but most KM only with KM.....That's why l had to have it specially made.

True enough, the 90 has the barrel gauges etc. But my remark about being cautious was valid. I believe that the needle rests on the stop under a bit of tension (any speedo...) and if you lever off the needle the pin can move back beyond the peg, so this can result in an inaccurate speed when the needle is refitted.
I did a swap with my son's speedo and gauge dash array even though it came out of an XJ6 (I think) and a V12. (The redline was much higher) but it worked fine. I replaced my own after the test.
As rgp says, the dash can be found on EBay et al, both pre-facelift and facelift for about $100-$200.00

Gerry. Again as I said...the problem, when l did mine anyway, ('91/2 V12) you couldn't get a facelift KM dial with both KMH and MPH on it. I had to have it specially made. I think that the later 4.0 had both....The needle was no problem, it just pops on and off. It also meant that everything stayed original to the car , l just swopped the dial plate over.

Looking on Flebay all the dashes have large MPH and smaller KMH for the US market, not the Canadian.
Any back to the original poster... a few pre facelift dials on flebay

Mal4d, where did you get the new dial faces made, and how much was it? I have a Canadian XJ12 in the US, and I'd like to get a dual marked dial that retains the km odo.

Thanks

What's the history on this? Did this big speedo error just pop up out of the blue or what? Any other symptoms? Besides being inaccurate is the speedo erratic in operation?

I'm wondering if your speed sensor and/or interface is on the blink

Cheers

Default Might be bad connections behind the guages

I pulled the instrument cluster and reworked the connections. That fixed mine. See here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...8/#post1058526

The speedo was not operational when I bought the car. When I removed it I found a piece of plastic (origin unknown) that was caught in the mechanism. I put the speedo back in the car and it would operate but the needle would stick then bounce then indicate but not correctly.

In the end I decided to buy another speedo that worked properly. Much easier than trying to fix the old one.

I used a company in the UK called Lochwood, Jaguar XJS KMH Speedo meter clocks. Dials
They made it for me (at a greater cost than they now sell them for....).

I removed my '96 cluster and shined the contacts with a very small Dremel wire brush. It was losing the speedo function but now works perfectly.
Cheers, RagJag

Question Replace dial or replace the whole speedometer

This is what I want to do with my speedometer (KMH bold and MPH secondary) but I hesitate to order from Lockwood. I have a feeling that fitting it would be beyond my skill level and tricky. My current dial is KMH only.

But if I were to fit a new speedometer altogether, but with MPH bold, and KMH secondary, would that work in my 92 ???
