Default Thermal / Sound Insulation

I've been poking around various sources to find a replacement for the inner wing thermal / sound insulation since mine was past its sell by - and I'm not putting that huge piece of sponge back in the transmission tunnel. It occurs to me that almost everywhere this stuff is stupid expensive, led I think by the audiofool community - to the point where I firmly believe the price to be something of a urine extraction even on car builder type sites, weight for weight gold is cheaper than some of the offerings out there.

There are predominantly 4 places I need this 'stuff'

On the underside of the bonnet
On each inner wing above the foot wells
On top of the gearbox (not fitted to the tunnel but the gearbox)

I was doing OK until I realised some of these things cost 3 figures for a square metre (lets say a yard in US terms) - which does not impress me as value - price does not necessarily mean quality or value.

I'm tempted just to buy some aluminium sheet and some 6mm closed cell foam with adhesive on one side and make my own panels. I'd prefer it not to be 'glueing' to the car at all so I can protect the areas with an anti corrosion wax.

Any experience here replacing this 'stuff'

Under the bonnet, I’ve used 1/8” thick closed cell nitrile foam. 3M#80 adhesive bonds it very well to the underside of the metal hood.

Whatever you choose for the tranny tunnel, make sure it can survive the heat.

If you’re looking for soundproofing, then you may want to look into Mass Loaded Vinyl, which is the generic term for Dynamat and such.

Ben this stuff is good and cheap, I have it on my bonnet and gearbox:

Comes in various pack sizes:

The glue on it is fearsomely strong too.

only 2mm thick, far better airflow

I'd prefer not to use the stick on stuff - at least not that uber grip stuff - many of the offerings out there are that very same structure since they can't function unless 100% in contact - they don't stop sound they stop vibration of the substrate - I believe Jaguars original inner wing stuff was glued, the bonnet stuff wasn't. I'm not convinced that restricting airfflow on the bonnet is a good idea - water will get in there and you won't see what it is doing.

Whilst I'd like to keep things quiet as they were from the factory I'm not hell bent on doing so, heat management is my primary goal.
