Default Tires for my 1996 XJS 225 or 235?

So it's that time, I need a new set of tires. The car has 12 k original miles with original tires on so they need to be replaced, although I will keep them .1996 came with 225/60r16 can I mount 235/60r/16? Would it drive better or worst? Shall I stick to the original size? I'm located in Studio City, CA. There are so many brands and models, which ones would you recommend? I am not looking for ultra-high performance.

I have mounted 245/55/16 and it drives great. This size has exactly the same roll-off distance. So no deviations on the speedometer.

Terry,

Nice-looking car!

Those rims look to be the Fondmetal 16" lattice wheel which has a 7J width. The maximum tyre width for that 7J rim is 225mm.. If you want a slightly better handling tyre, then why not fit the 225/55 16 which was the Jaguar fitment when the XJS was fitted with Sports Suspension on 7J rims. I moved many years ago from 225/60 to 225/55 and they've been fine.

Good luck

Paul

I have 16" 7J rims on both Jaguars and both with 245/55/16 tires. More than 200,000 km without problems because of sufficient tire height. Drives very comfortable.

Hi so far, I'm torn between 225/60/16 and 245/55/16
I just don't want the tires to stick out. Are you sure 245/55/16 won't make the car look like a race car? Any photos would be appreciated
How come no one has mentioned 235/60/16?

Thanks, t
Terry

Terry,

It may not be an issue in the US, but have you actually asked your insurance company if it will confirm in writing to you that it's acceptable to put 245 width tyres on your 7J rims and that your insurance would be valid if you had an accident? In the UK, I could not get an insurance company to confirm in writing that it is acceptable for me to put a tyre wider than 225 on my 4 litre XJS with 7J rims.

Just a thought.

245 tires are 0.79" wider, so 0.39" on the inside and 0.39" on the outside.

Diameter / roll-off periphery too large.
