Default Tires for a 1994 XJS

I currently have a set of 235/60 R15 Pirelli P600 tires on my 1994 XJS ( a 4.0 litre convertible 2+2). Due to the prices these tires are going for, I would like to find something different when I buy new tires. I have researched the subject half to death (including on this forum!) but still have a question.

Jaguar gave 2 tire size recommendations for the 1992 XJS- 235/60 R15 and 215/70 R15. For some reason, however, Jaguar only gave 1 size recommendation (for 15 inch wheels) on the 1994 XJS which, if I understand correctly, has substantially the same frame and body as the 1992. I have found several attractively priced all season 215/70 R15 98V tires online, but hesitate to place an order for them unless I know for sure that they will fit. To further complicate matters, my car is equipped with lattice wheels, which I believe are from an older XJS since, to my knowledge, the 1994 model was not offered with lattice wheels.

So, am I safe in ordering 215/70 R15 tires for my car???

There is no difference in the body between a 1992 and 1994. The 215/70 R15 tires will be fine. My 1994 came with 16" wheels, I am running 225/60 R16 tires with no problems.

Mine had lattice 15 inch rims. Yea, it was a pain to find new tires to fit. I also had P600s, but couldn’t justify the cost (I have half a dozen toys).

So I went with Coopers. Only got 150 miles before 1 blew and one disintegrated while fishtailing at 70. Not sure I would recommend them. Neither the dealer nor Cooper would stand behind them. And I’m out about 3 years of driving fun and $10k in repairs.

But then again, the Pirellis I have on my Land Cruiser in Uganda... 4 blowouts at speed, all within one safari trip. Same thing happened with 2 of my safari partners. Not sure I would recommend Pirellis anymore. In Uganda, I went with Hankook for all my cars, including my S600. No problems after 3 years on horrible roads

Goodride RP28 - 215-70R15 work great on mine and will keep the speedo dead accurate.

Made in China, but largest tyre company in China by a mile. They also manufacture Westlake tyres in same factory.

Yokohama Avid Ascend. Comes in XJS sizes.

My XJS rolls like silk on the road. Excellent all around be it wet highway or dry country roads. Super low rolling resistance I actually charted an uptick in fuel milage vs my old mushy winter tires.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and thoughts! I feel much better informed now and comfortable about shedding these Pirelli P600's.

I thought you all might like an update on my tire issues.....

I replaced my worn Pirelli P600 235/60 R15 tires with 215/70 R15 tires, which fit great on my 1994 XJS. The tires I have now are a brand I've never heard of- they are Otanis (which I believe are made in Thailand), model number EK1000, which I bought new on eBay. Here's the thing- they are V rated, all season, with a 50,000 mile warranty, and seem to have pretty decent reviews. Best of all..... they are $60.00 each, with free shipping! So, I bought 4 tires for $240.00, shipped directly to my local shop, who did the balancing, installation, etc. for $110.00. My total cash outlay for the whole thing was $350.00, or roughly the cost to buy one Pirelli P600!

Since I live in Wisconsin with its notoriously lousy winters, I am only occasionally driving my XJS, so I haven't gotten the car onto the highway to really put my new tires through their paces. When the nicer weather arrives, I will be able to report on how these tires stack up next to the Pirellis. For now, though, I'm happy to say that I have four new, readily available speed rated tires without breaking the bank!

woodwindfanatic,

There may have been different specs for US-bound cars, but the XJS was running as standard on 16" wheels before 1994. There is an an optional 16" lattice wheel that was offered.

Many owners with earlier 15" wheels move to 16" wheels because of the easier availability of tyre sizes.

I would put put the car back on its original 16" wheels and then fit the original-sized 225/60 or 225/55 tyres.

Good luck

Paul

I originally bought my car with 225/55 tires and found that the underside of the car was getting scraped a lot more than when I switched over to 225/60 tires.

The difference is 0.2" from Floor to road.
