Default Transmission oil level and dipstick

Hi forum, a short pre-story
i bought this jag few months back, it was overheating a bit, so i started with full cooling maintenance, when i removed the rad, i had to unscrew transmission cooler pipes, and at that moment i had to put my car on recover to get it to the inspection (for vin check), i forgot to cap them, so some oil got out, but i dont know how much, so i went to check oil level, and this is what i got

i tested it like 10 times, always the same it even going 2cm above the plastic thing.

Also, on the dipstick it says GM 400, but i though my gearbox is ZF , since my car is xjs 1992, 5.3 V12

Could it be a wrong dipstick?

Thank you

Make sure that you run the box through all the gears a couple of times and that it is up to temperature before checking.
If it is still showing over full then you will need to drain some out.

Jaguar never used a ZF tranny on the V12's. Very early cars got a Borg-Warner, then they got the TH400. They stayed with the TH400 until the 6.0 V12, when they got the GM 4L80E.

Previous owner or previous mechanic overfilled. Happens all the time.

water instead of coolant
literally everything described in the book happened with my car .

i dont believe its previous owner, interior is literally brand new, smells like flowers, last CD has mozart in it and manual full of notes.

mouserider,

I don't know about US fluids for autoboxes, but over here, I'd be really worried about the colour of that fluid. Standard autofluid over here, Dexron ATF etc is red. Clean fluid should be a nice cherry colour.

Just saying...

You are checking it with the engine running right? It will be above the line if the engine is off. Confused me greatly when I first bought the car.

I'm in the US but no jag yet but i've seen plenty of transmission fluid this color. Just used fluid. If its dark then that's a worry. Smell is a big factor too. But as far as color I'd say its just used fluid that cleaned up the inside of the transmission. Grain of salt though.

Here's what happens.

The ATF expands a LOT when it is HOT. So if the fluid level is checked with the fluid cold or merely warm you'll have a lower reading on the stick. The natural thing to do is add more fluid. This is precisely why most automatic transmission dipsticks show an acceptable or safe 'range' of fluid level. If the level is in (or even touching) the 'safe range', don't add fluid until driving a full 10 miles or so and checking the level again

Some people like to keep the ATF precisely 'full', and that's fine. But it can be a little exasperting, actually.

Cheers
