That is the kick down cable for a BW66. I think you need to remove the trans pan to remove it. I have only ever seen photos of a 66 and every one had this cable still in the trans.

I have my engine and gearbox out of the car at the moment. I would like to fully drain and change the oil but not sure how to go about this. Could anyone tell me the best method and if there is any other preventative work like seals etc I should do on the gearbox while I have good access? Many thanks in advance

The gearbox has to be drained by unbolting the sump. A messy business at best, but a large plastic container under the sump is one way to contain it. Inside there is a filter which is held in place by a single bolt with a spacer on it, and is the filter is also attached to a nylon tube that comes down from above it. Renew the filter, and reattach the nylon tube to it, then do up the bolt with the spacer in the position it was in.

The standard cork filter is not a brilliant item, and dressing it with gasket goo sparingly each side will help as long as the surfaces are 100% clean and oil free, but do NOT do it up too tight, just a touch more than finger tight.
Deep pan aftermarket sumps with drain plugs are available, as are better gaskets, the Rolls Royce of which are Moroso items 9with RR prices) eg:

I removed my BW65 and left the kickdown cable attached to the transmission. I disconnected it at the other end, where it attaches to the throttle spindle on my car. Then I delivered it like that to the guy who rebuilt the trans. I reinstalled it with the cable attached to the transmission, snaking the cable back up the engine. Are you not able to remove it at the other end and pull the transmission with it attached?

9 all together. 8 then the 12 point one.

I've been reading and such and I think its just stuck on the dowels.I finally found where the dowels are located and i guess they do stick and some heat usually gets them free.

There are 10 bolts Rescue, i have just counted them on my spare engine. get stuck in again!

If it is any comfort I had the same problem when I removed mine! I think you have missed one at the top somewhere, there are more there than you think.

I couldn't find a reference anywhere online on how many.

So hopefully someone in the future finds this thread even more useful.

Default One hour? Incredible. Was it difficult to lower the engine?
