Angry Trembling noise

Hi Guys
I have a 1990 Jaguar XJS 3.6 coupe and i can hear a trembling noise when accelerating hard from stand still only. It seems that the tremble is coming from the transmission area as if the whole unit is shaking on acceleration.I had the mounts changed but still the same problem. I cannot pinpoint the where that noise is coming from and neither could the mechanic say for sure. Anybody out there had a similar problem?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum yabaman,

I've moved your question from Europe Region to XJS forum.

This is the place to post tech questions about your XJS and members here with the same model will be able to help.

Graham

My first thought is a bad u-joint. Next would be the tail shaft bearing. I would think a very bad transmission fluid leak would accompany a bad tail shaft bushing though.

The 3.6 has a bearing fixed to the floorpan halfway down the propshaft, effectively a two-piece propshaft. If this is worn out it would produce these symptoms.

That could most likely be it! I responded from ignorance of the 3.6. I've only delt with V12 XJSs, and had no idea any XJS had a center bearing.

YESSSSSS it was that special bearing that caused that rumbling noise on hard accelaration. It took some time to find cause the part num was superseded.
I just want to thank Supercharged and Greg for his detailed diagram and valuable help guys. Thank you

Just FYI, and in case you do not know, there is a water hose under the inlet manifold that is slightly S shaped and about 8 inches long, connecting the water pump to the block.. Nobody knows it is there. If you have never changed it, do so now, as it fails spectacularly and all the water gets pumped out in about 15 seconds.

Not that Greg in France needs my backup, but yes this was the cause of my first XJS roadside let down with the recently purchased car
Although, it was a very impressive smoke show
