Trip computer... Illumination
Trip computer... Illumination
my trip computer only illuminates for a short time after I turn the key on...
then fades to non illuminated...
is that an option or is it miss hooked up to some timer.. which is ok as most of the time at night I do not care to look at it...
I looked in my owner hand book thinking I missed out on reading how to get it to light back up, though it confirms that it just should be on when the ignition is in II...
any one have any thoughts on this?

mine acts like it is connected to some kind of timer...
does not work with the dash light dimmer...
I do not mind it going dark so much as I would like to be in control of when it so I can light it back up....

Don't know if this will help but it covers the trip computer pretty well.

Facelift computers have 2 different forms of illumination.
The buttons down the sides are illuminated through traditional bulbs, one each side which are accessible from the top of the computer. 10 mins to remove the computer and a 1/4 turn of the bulbholders removes the bulbs.
However the display illumination is achieved through 2 soldered circuit bulbs which can be prone to failure, requiring new bulbs to be soldered onto the board. Much more of a pain to access and repair.
The display illumination is also linked to the lighting circuit of the car and will dim when the vehicle lights are put on.
Hope that helps

Wow, that's the facelift trip computer! I assumed it would be the older style.
The bulb that lights up the buttons are the pain in the butt soldered bulbs. The bulbs that backlight the screen are much easier to access and replace. Never did understand why they did that.
Anyways, if you search my posts, I believe I explain how I replaced my backlight bulbs with LEDs. It will require a small piece of theatrical lighting gel to correct the color, but it's indistinguishable from the OEM color once done. It's also easy to do.
It will no longer dim with the dimmer, but it also eliminated the massive amount of heat imaging from that screen. Ever touch that while it's been on for awhile? Wow is it hot!
