Default trunk wont *close*

Usually people have problems with the latch mechanism failing or some other issue electrical or otherwise, trunk worked fine this morning now the ****ing 'striker' keeps sliding down when I push to close, naturally Jaguar used bolts on paper thin metal that are now stripped to **** and it doesn't sufficiently tighten the clamp. What a stupid ****ing design I can't drive anywhere like this.

Ideas?

It's been a long time since I had my hands on any of that stuff so I can't quite remember the lay of the land. But, is there any way to get behind the striker to install nuts on the bolts?

Cheers

Hello Vancouver

I am presuming you mean part number #7 that is bolted to the car body, not the lid.

On my 1980, you can get pretty good access to the top bolt, but poor access to the bottom bolt. You should/might be able to use a helicoil on the top bolt,

On mine - I knew my locking mechanism was faulty and it was on the "to do" list - then it failed altogether (with the boot shut). Fortunately I did not have the fuel tank or carpet installed at the time and i managed to get a very long extension piece on that top bolt and undo it.

I then went to the boot and played He-Man and the boot lid opened up (with the striker attached). It did not take a lot of effort , so I don't think the bottom bolt actually does much.

Cheers
Steve

I raged on it for two hours, remembering Grant's advice and drank heavily I managed to cobble it back together for now in a position that locks.

Still an awful design poor access, stripped the bolt holes, I think I'll have my shop just weld it on while I'm there. What is it with Jaguar and these oddball threaded bolts you take them out more than twice and BAM its stripped to ****.

It's simply an interesting design feature.

'Tis those hidden fuses that I find diabolic

I remember my mechanic cursing those out, year ago, on a brake sys rebuild if I remember. Inline demons hidden behind consoles was the choice wording.

Vancouver
The steel loop is adjustable and is fixed to the car by a plate and two bolts. Just loosen the two bolts. adjust the loop to the required height and tighten them. Might take a couple of goes to get it perfect...
