Default Tyre size and brand advice

I have acquired a set of 16” lattice alloys x7j for my 89 convertible. Can anyone tell me the optimum tyre size to use please. Also I was thinking of using falken tyres as I have had previous good results and they are reasonably priced. Any other ideas ? Thanks all

I like Pirelli in my XJS. It came with Pirellis and had had Pirelli all its life until a couple of years ago when I decided to implement cost savings measures since I only drive the car once or twice a week, and got Falkens. The difference is noticeable. I just bought a set of Pirellis a couple of weeks ago to replace the Falkens because the ride was so poor.

Kuhmo 225 60 16s (KUMHO ECSTA HS51 225/60R16 98 W) are what I have, pretty cheap and very good. Your tyres must be at least V rated though, or else illegal on the XJS in the UK. Pirellis are great but really expensive.

I had Falkens on my car for awhile. I was happy with them in all respects except noise. The particular model I bought had a lot of tread noise. But, Falkens come in a variety of tread designs so the model.type you are considering might be fine in that regard.

As for size, your '89 probably came with 235/60x15 tires. There is some variance by brand but these would typically have a 26" overall diameter and 9" section width. A 225/60x16 would be about ½" larger diameter; a 225/55x16 about ½" smaller diameter. Both have about 9" section width.

Cheers
DD

I have on my XJS 240/55/16 tires on a 7J X 16 rim. Also have these ten years on my X300.

Thanks for your help all. It’s still going to add up to a few quid looking at tyre prices. As I don’t think I will be doing many miles in her I will probably go for one of the cheaper brands.

I have W rated Falken Ziex on mine, no road noise and perform well on canyon drives. I like the old skool look of more sidewall on the XJS versus a low pro tyre. Keeps my front valance from being ripped apart by concrete parking barriers

All those prices seem better than uk prices Greg.
