As I resurrect my 94 xjs, u-joints are something that it has needed for a while... Its a heavy car so I would like to get the best quality part for the job. I generally like to avoid paying too much at the dealer...

Has anyone replaced the driveshaft u-joints? I'm leaning toward Beck Arnley for this but thought I would see what others recommend here. Rockauto has URO joints for $8...

Replacing UJs on an XJs is the same as any other car. Nothing exotic or unusual about the parts or the job.

Your local NAPA or similar parts store should have them.

Spicer or Dana/Spicer is a known good brand. There are others. I have a very iffy feeling about URO brand parts, though.

From memory the NAPA number is 369 and the Dana/Spicer number is 5-153X

Yes, it's a very common GM u-joint. Camaro, Firebird, etc etc. I can't remember the GM numbers off hand. Maybe 7806140 or 346--- ?? I dunno. For umpteen years there were two part numbers that covered about 80% of all GM cars.

Doesn't matter, though....the GM ones in GM boxes were stupid expensive ($45 each in the 70s-80s) so darn few people ever bought 'em under the GM number.

If you were to check with Dana or a similar company I'd wager you'd find that a dozen or so of the most common u-joint numbers would cover 80% of all cars ever made. The last 20% probably take 50 part numbers.

Trucks get very tricky when it comes to u-joints, though.

Oh...one more thing....Always beware of substitute part numbers. I've rejected some inexpensive UJs where they would obviously *fit* correctly but the body of the joint itself was clearly smaller and less hefty than what came off the car. Jag always used stout stuff for UJs, bearings, etc. The window switches and other knick-knacks might come from the 89-cent bargain box but, where it really counted, Jaguar usually used good stuff !

Cheers
