thinking a bit further ahead, my 5.3 89 convertible will be having a fresh coat of paint and a new hood. Would it be better to have it painted first ? Or the hood? Could the hood be removed and re covered off the car? By hood I mean the roof. Thanks

Hood first to make sure it fits properly and doesn't damage the new paint in the process.
Then take it off and paint the car.
There you go, two answers, diametrically opposite!

Love it!
But yours is better, Steve, IF the hood can be removed OK and replaced without scratching the paint OK and still fit properly...
i don't see why it cant be done ether way. i left the top on mine when i repainted it, i just took it loose from where it met the body and then re attached it when done with the paint and body work. iv got some better pictures somewhere but this should give you a visual anyway.
you can see whoever did a really poor repaint previously painted it black over the factory white paint. and they didn't even take the top loose they just masked it off.
i took it loose and covered everything when spraying. but left the top on.
this is the same top that was on the car before i repainted it post re-paint.
