Default What is this hole for in the oil pan?

GoodMorning. I am new to the Jaguar world and plan to purchase a '95 XJS 4.0tomorrow, if the inspection goes well.

The other day when I first saw the car, I noticed a hole in the left side ofthe oil pan. It is about 3/8-1/2" diameter, 1/2" up from the bottomand maybe 8-10" from the back. There is no plug in it, just an open hole.

I have already posted this in the general forum but wanted to try this specificgroup to see if you can offer any help in identifying this hole in the oil pan.

What drew my attention was a trace of an oil leak seeping in that area. Itcould be coming from the rack and pinion boot, but I'll see it better tomorrowwhen it is on the lift. Is this normal?

Seethe picture attached. The blue arrow points to the hole that is for theoil drain plug (I think). The red arrow points to the hole inquestion.

Any help will in identifying this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,Scott

It's not an actual hole. It's a casting. Oil won't leak out. I'm guessing it was meant for something, but never got used, or its used when they cast the sump.

Nothing to worry about.

The hole is just as you have told me. It's just a casting hole and nothing to worry about.

Well we made our decision and bought the 95 Ice Blue XJS Convertible. We'll pick it up Monday night. It will need minor work and TLC but it is definitely drivable as is. We're excited and look forward to getting her cleaned up, shined up and bringing her back to her full glory.

This will be my first British automobile, but a dream come true.

Happy motoring everyone!
