Default What Petrol should I be using 1990 XJS V12

Hi It's been far too long since I have had my XJS on the road which runs on leaded petrol that I used to get at Sainsbury's Petrol Stations.

I don't know if they sell this anymore, because nearly all cars are running on unleaded these days.

Does anyone know where I can buy leaded Petrol or can recommend what they use in their own cars.

You do not need leaded, the valve seats are hardened as standard. I suggest you use the 98 octane premium stuff.

+ too many.

I ONLY use our 98 octane in ALL my Jags, and have done so since leaded went AWOL a long time ago.

Many will comment on lesser octane, waste of money, etc, etc, but it is your car and purely your choice, but our "leaded" was known as "Super", and had an octane # of 98+, so the same # in unleaded just makes sense to me.

Hi Grant

That's amazeballs! never knew that you could use unleaded, I always thought you needed to use an additive.

So that's another little problem solved!

Maaaate, its a JAG, sooooo forgiving. "Worry less enjoy more", and I need a Canadian Club, Hi octane unleaded, naturally.

Really they are not super fussy cars, OK, some have issues, but 99% of those issues can be traced to lousy maintenance somewhere in its life, so the car is not responsible for that.

I ran the HE on our 91 for a short time, $$ were tight, and it did not complain, not so responsive, etc, but still more than acceptable. The 98 is just that much sweeter in it.

The X300 has a sticker "95RON ONLY", but it gets 98, as does the S Type, and the MK10, and all before them.

Hi Grant

Looks like I've been getting paranoid, I just didn't want to blow the engine up.

So looks like I've been worrying over nothing.

Agreed.

With a V12, "drive it like you stole it", but NEVER EVER overheat it, that is the weakest thing with them, and that is pure and simple lack of maintenance of the massive cooling system.

Mine run just fine in our 47c summer temps, and always have, but as I said cooling system care is way above #1 on any to do list. I take more care of my Jag cooling systems than I do of cleaning the car windows, if you get what I am saying.

Hi Grant

Yeah! I'm always very aware of overheating and like yourself is one thing I keep both eyes on.
