Default XJS Map lights working opposite

Am hoping for some advice solving the following map light problem on my XJS. Light switch 1 ( on the left side of the 2 switches) turns on the light on the right side of the car. Light switch 2 ( on the right side of the 2 switches) does not turn on anything. Both switches light up when they are depressed.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

One switch should light up both lights in the rear. Both passenger and drivers side.

The other switch should light up only the front passenger light.

Check the bulbs before anything gets over complicated.

Thank you Vee. My keen powers of observation are obviously not so keen. I failed to see the lights going on behind me.

The left front light goes on when the door opens, but not when the switch is depressed. Are there 2 separate bulbs?

This is intentional. The driver's side light goes on with the door, but not with the dash switch, the thinking being that the driver does not want to be dazzled if the passenger wants to look at the map!

The centre roof light can be set by rolling it fore and aft, to be on all the time, off all the time, or on with the doors.

Just to add to Vee and Greg's comments.

The switch nearest the driver controls only the front passenger courtesy light. All four courtesy lights should come on when the door is open. (and map lights too if set)

The second switch indeed only controls the rear courtesy lights. They have a sometimes overlooked feature in that they can be swiveled up and down which causes the lights to turn on or off. Before you open up in search of a bad bulb, make sure one of them isn't in the middle position which is off when the switch is pressed.

Also, no dome lights on a conv but we do have map lights in the sun visors which can also be turned on or off manually and set to come on when the door is open.

Thank you Allan and Greg. It is much nicer to know that it is just my ignorance of the car and not an electricL fault needing repair.

If you think the operational permutations are weird...ha!.... just take a look a interior light wiring diagrams for a Jag XJS.

As interior light schemes go they're definitely bizarre

So I finally got around to looking into this and it turns out I have a burnt out rear interior courtesy light. How does the fixture come apart to replace the bulb?

Thanks

Lol. So the entire fixture including the chrome frame just pulls out?

Yes, chrome and all comes out. It is held in by two round metal 'points', one at the center of each end. One of them is spring loaded. Try prying out on one end with moderate force. If that end does not dislodge and come out, switch to the other side and try.

Good luck!
