Here it is, 9 yrs. after the original question was asked: I have the same issue; And, altho there are plenty of surge tank diagrams out there, there are no instructions on how to replace the filter. Can anyone please advise?? Many thanks. '88 xjs 5.3l.

Hi. Yep, I got that diagram. What I need to know is how to remove the lock ring from the tank. The original post had that issue, also...evidently.
Thanks for the fast reply!!

Just tap it with a screw driver and a hammer on the tangs on the lock ring. There’s a little ramp in lock ring that goes under a tab, so you’d back it off. Should all fall apart pretty easily.

Solentblue@John

When I did my Sump Tank/Surge Tank, I knocked the Locking Ring round with a Hammer and a Piece of Hard Wood (Similar to what Jagsandmgs has done)

As I was a bit (make that a lot Paranoid) about causing an accidental Spark with Petrol Fumes about.

If you want to drain the Sump Tank/Surge Tank, there is a Tap 'Thingy' underneath the Car which is concealed by a Rubber Grommet

(That hooks out with a Screwdriver)

Loosen off the Tap first, then you can put a piece of Plastic Tube over the Spigot on the Tap and drain all the Petrol out of the Tank.

So best to wait until the Fuel Tank is getting empty, because its all gravity fed and you will have more Petrol running, than you know what to do with.

Don't put the Petrol back in the Tank, use it for the Lawn Mower or something.

Also Change the Main Fuel Filter while you are about it (only about $10) make sure you put that in the right way round or it won't work.

If you want to 'Push the Boat out' you could also treat yourself to a New Fuel Pump, these are generic and fitted to lots of different Cars.

No need to Spend $200 you can get one on ebay about $30 with a 2 year guarantee! like I did.

Back to the 'Sump Tank' you may find that the Tap under the Car doesn't line up with the hole under the Car (common problem) so you may have to

loosen its mounting bolts to 'hoik it over a bit'

If Changing the Fuel Filter best to do so when the Tank is Empty as that is Gravity Fed as well and you could have Petrol running all over the place.

Don't forget to disconnect the Battery and be careful of Petrol Fumes so best done outside.

Drain Tap for the 'Sump Tank' undo it with a Socket

The Sump Tank Drain Tap is Concealed by a Rubber Grommet just forward of the Rear Silencer/Muffler

Sump Tank + Fuel Pump + Filter
Sump Tank Ring can be undone by knocking it round with a Hammer and a piece of Hardwood as a drift and then you can get to the Filter.

Disconnect The Battery First to Prevent any Sparks!

Done deal, thanks orangeblossom and jagsandmgs. Kind of a PITA to get to, but removal and replacement of the filter went very well...just like you said. I also replaced the canister, but will prob. hold off on the fuel pump, for now.
Thanks, again.

Orangeblossom you mention the fuel pump (external one) is generic & fit different car's. I didn't know that. Do you know which other one they cross reference with.

Hi Lawrence

Not sure about Part Numbers (Greg or the Wizard will know)

But this is the one that I bought for £28.99p (UK) off ebay with a 2 Year Guarantee!

There was only one small problem: The Positive and the Negative Terminal were the wrong way round, which just meant swapping the Wires round.

This was not a fault as such, as a lot of these 'Generic Fuel Pumps' are like that as 'Grant' will confirm.

For £28 (UK) instead of about £200! (UK) I'm very happy with it.

These are all over ebay for about £30 (UK)

It is a much copied very generic pump. Just one search on ebay has a parts compatibility of 418 vehicles. I have crap in my tank I don't wanna risk a real $100 bosch pump. The $20-30 one usually last me 3-5 years. You can always tell if they are going out because they become very noisy.
