I purchased a CPO 2009 XK coupe 17 days ago from dealer 50 miles away. Everything was fine. After leaving in the garage for 3 days, I went to start it and it was as dead as a door nail. Put a 10 AMP charger on it for a few hours, wouldn't accept the charge. Left it overnight on 2 AMP's, still nothing. Jumped it and took it to a local Jaguar dealer. Battery under warranty and believe it or not, I was back on the road in 20 min.

Question. I've never had a battery go from fine to dead in such a short period of time. I would think that an electrical systems test during the CPO process would have easily discovered this. What do you think ?

I know a common cure for some battery related problems has been to lock the doors when you park the car. If you do some searching in this forum, you'll find a thread where one of the members here did some measurements and found that the car stayed "semi active" for a long time after it had been turned off if you left the doors unlocked. Locking them made the car go to sleep immediately. I did a lot of research before buying, and the battery problem (and other issues related to the battery running out of juice) are by FAR the most common issue with the XK. Quirky, but locking the doors seems to be the commonly accepted "solution".

Don't know if this will solve your particular issue, but its something you could try...

 

Also heard to keep your key far away from your car. Otherwise, the car will detect it and uses up the battery.

 

This is true. The computer will stay active and look for commands thus using electricity and draining the battery.

 

How far away are we talking here?
Would an alternate be to place the key fob in a metal or similar material container to block the signals?
The reason I'm asking, is I can only store the key fobs so far from the car, my house is only so big!

A metal box should work fine. I keep my keys in my old metal pirate's chest piggy bank from when I was a kid. The keys are about 15 feet from the car.

The range on the fobs is only about 3 feet... it's pretty short. I keep mine about 15 feet away on a key rack.

 

Had the same problem, left the fob in the car while parked in the garage. The dealer/service department said it's best to lock the doors and keep the fob 30 feet away from the car.

 

I do not think that it was a key issue. A charged battery that goes to full discharge in 3 days, then it would not accept a charge at all, was a faulty battery, likely with a shorted cell in it.

I always leave my car unlocked in the garage and have many multi weeks long periods when I do not start it. No problem with the OEM batteries for either this XK or my previous XK8.

Interior lights, if left on, could easily drain the battery even overnight. Just normal stand-by mode should not.

If a battery won't accept a charge or discharges in a short period of time. Then the battery is duff. As for minimizing the discharge rate when stored. I always lock with 2 presses on the remote. I was told this will put the computers into sleep mode straight away.
There has been a lot of advise on here on trickle chargers. Or conditioners i think they are sometimes called.

 

I have an '07 and had the battery replaced last summer. They don't last very long on these cars, as this thread's discussion attests.

 

These cars electrical demands are much higher than "other" cars. Additionally, the electronics in these cars are sensitive.

If you replace your battery, I highly recommend an Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) battery. The run-of-the-mill lead acid batteries don't last as long and are subject to several chemical processes that AGM batteries do not suffer from.

They do cost more...
