Default 2009 Jaguar Smart Key Battery Low

Hello Everyone:

First time this has happened. 2009 XKR Convertible:

Readout on middle instrument cluster shows:

SMART KEY LOW BATTERY

When the battery is replaced in the Smart Key does the car have to be re-programmed?

Can this be done by the car owner?

How does one open the Smart Key to replace the battery?

Thanks for your help

Took my key to dealer parts dept. and they replaced the watch type battery. They slide off the chrome sides off and then sperated the two halfs, replace battery and put the sides back on. Look easy to do but they did it in 2 minutes with the right battery. No reprogramming with the car.

Done....both remotes with fresh battery at cost of $5.49 each at Walgreens.

Took about 3 minutes for the first time battery change.

Both work great.

Thanks so much for the reply White XKR-S and others.

These kind of batteries have a shelf life. Some time back the same exact thing happened to me; the 'newly' bought batteries (same pack) were 'expired'; a fresher battery did the trick. You can test the voltage on these CR batteries; levels are quite critical. Can't recall what the right voltage should be though. Hope this helps.

My 2010 XK has just started showing the warning on the dash display about a low battery on the Smart Key. I've replaced the battery twice this week - each time with a battery that is new and fully charged. But still the warning will not go away. Any ideas? And what exactly is a "battery reset"?
Thanks for the help.

He means, disconnect the car's battery and touch the +ve & -ve cables together to discharge any residual power in the car's various control modules. That pretty much wipes all memorised functions in the car, and you then have to reset things.

As a more targeted option, try pulling the 'keyless vehicle module' fuse, which is Fuse 3 (20A, yellow) in the fusebox in the LH footwell. Leave it out for a few seconds, then replace it.

If that doesn't work and you want to go for the full battery disconnect, here's the procedure for getting the car back to normal:

1. Connect the battery cables and tighten to 5 Nm. Ground cable must be connected last.
2. Install the battery cover and close the luggage compartment lid.
3. Start the engine and allow to idle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
(n.b.: when you first switch on, the display will ask you to press the brake pedal & apply the electronic handbrake, to recalibrate)
4. Switch the engine off.
5. Restart the engine and allow to idle for approximately two minutes (this will allow the ECM to learn the idle values).
6. Apply and hold the brake pedal, select drive and allow the engine to idle for a further two minutes.
7. Drive the vehicle for approximately five miles/eight kilometres of varied driving to enable the ECM to complete its learning strategy.
8. Reset the audio unit and climate control assembly to original customer settings.
9. Reset the door window motors (wind down & hold until there's a click, wind up & hold for another click).
(n.b. store your current seat positions in M1, then adjust & store any other positions you used to have)
