Default 2011 XK Known Issues

Hi everyone. I just bought a 2011 Jaguar XK 5.0 that has 60K miles on it and have been researching these boards and found the timing chain making noise at startup is somewhat of a known issue (mine does not have the issue at this time).

It's tough to tell what, if anything else is a known problem with these cars that I need to look out for/get maintenance on to avoid (I also read they have a timing CHAIN and so no 75,000 mile timing belt replacement is needed, nice!). Can anyone provide any insight?

I'm continuing to use the search function and read but any current opinions are much appreciated.

Correct, no 75,000 mile belt replacement is needed, but you sure should change the Chain, tensioners and guides.

Before I had posted this I had called Jaguar and asked about replacing it, they said it was not needed. Split decision, any others with input? Trying to avoid the around 3K replacement on this chain if possible but will not risk it if it's a definite

Just make sure you check oil level, which is a pain in the *** unless you do it first thing in the morning before you start the car. There have been some issues with low oil levels on the 5.0L with no warning lights prior to alert you. Otherwise, a terrific engine and a great car. Have fun!

thanks for your great response, I haven't read about this issue yet and it sounds important. I'll be sure to check that. How do you feel about timing chain replacement? Is it a must? Or is it a "maybe depending on the wear/tear"?

There have been several reports of water pump and crossover pipe failures. I've suffered the crossover pipe failure personally, and I think I may have to do the timing chain, but not today...
The glove box falling down instead of lowering itself sedately is an easily solved issue.
Never the less these are great cars and I love the 5.0!
Regards

Mine's at 62,000 miles and there is absolutely zero clattering of the chain, at start-up or otherwise. Of course I've changed the oil with the Jag Spec religiously so there's less chance of problems. I probably won't change my chain until I suspect there may be a problem. Who knows, it may make it well past 100,000.

I'd say cooling system is biggest potential failure... maybe change the thermostat, and check the hoses, pump and crossover. Also, ZF has changed their recommendation on their "lifetime" fluids with the hp628... so I would change the transmission fluid if/when you get the car... and maybe a new battery, and a tender. Other than that, enjoy the ride!

I have a Hyundia Genesis which has the same ZF 6 spd as my 2010 XKR. Although advertised as "sealed for life" ZF now recommends changing or at least topping up the fluid. I bought the filter and fluid kit from:
Genuine ZF Parts
Make sure that you don't cheap out on the fluid. You can find a number of discussions that claim that there are several cheaper brands that have the same specs as the Lifeguard fluid but I wouldn't chance it.

Without a doubt the cooling system is the weak link for X150 ownership. Although my car (2010 XK Coupe) has only 8700 miles, I religiously check the coolant level anytime I'm planning on taking the car out for a run. I also look at the front of the engine compartment for any signs of white specs from dry coolant or coolant smell after the drive. My neighbor with 38,000 miles recently lost his coolant and ended up replacing the head gaskets ($4400 job if he didn't have a warranty). This problem is something that could have deterred me from initially purchasing my car If I knew about it earlier.....now I just have to keep an eye out and generally I don't take very long trips. I horrible design for a high end car.

Welcome to the family! Your in good hands here with our forum and much great advice from "those that know" will keep you and your cat smiling.

As a starter your 2011 is the 2nd generation of this chassis, with the trustworthy 4.2L MPI its predecessor.
The 5.0 has yet to earn the 4.2s reputation for reliability, but to be fair the 4.2 had over a decade of refinement.

For your 5.0, the water pump is the more pressing issue, watch it closely as its loss can quickly cost you an engine. The other concern already mentioned is the timing chain and maybe the supercharger nose bearing.
Battery drain is a common topic, as our cats hate to be parked for long periods of time without a maintainer attached.
The glove box issue has plagued the series since 2007 (grrrrr) and easily researched here.

Fear not, we all work to keep informed here, so stay in touch!. Like myself, you'll enjoy the company and words of wisdom that keep our beauties purrin'.

Vince

P.S. Be sure to update your signature with your car info so we all know how best to respond, and again Welcome!

Regarding the engine coolant system issue. If it should turnout that you need a new water pump make sure your shop (dealer or Indie) replaces the old pump with the latest design/construction. There have been two or three iterations. You can find the appropriate part number in one of the several threads dealing with the issue. Hope you don't need it. Enjoy the ride and welcome aboard.
