Default 4.2 cut out like out of fuel??

Today my x150 4.2 XKR Cut out like it was out of fuel and if it has a 70 litre tank then it seems it was just that. Coughed to a halt started and stalled a few times. Breakdown folk arrived topped up with about 5litres. Car restarted. Drove to fuel station amd filled the tank. Took another 65 litres.

Now this is where it gets odd. When the car cut out it was reading half full. However unless it has a 120litre tank then it wasn't. Once refilled I started driving and got a fuel pump fault warning and a no fuel warning. Both cleared but tank still wasn't reading full.

whats the issue and what's the solution? It had a low pressure to fuel rail code stored but well it would have if it was run dry.

The fuel tank was empty though? So not the crossover pipe issue. After it cut out it took 70 litres ti fill it. The gauge is reading wrong.

Different animal. If you ran out of fuel I suspect whatever monitors the two fuel level sensors and puts the mark on the gauge is defective. Download a copy of the X150 service manual in the stickies of this subforum and read up on the tank. It is a saddle style that has a hump in the middle for the drive line and exhaust to pass under. Somewhat clever in that Jaguar designed a little venturi style pump to suck fuel from the left side to the main pump on the right side. There's two fuel level sensors (floats, arms, sensors etc.). Really friggin stupid design in that there's only access on the right side near the pump. You can't access the venturi or other bits on the left side through the hole unless you cut the top off the tank.

For the expense involved in removing the tank (exhaust and prop shaft need removed) I'd pay someone to figure out electrically if both sensors are functioning correctly before dropping the tank.

Maybe another dumb assumption, but have you done a battery disconnect reboot lately after fully charging the battery. Possibly but doubtfully it's a battery related problem. I'd start there since it's free to do.

You could also do like I do on my motorcycle and just reset the trip meter at each fill up and not go too far before filling up again.

I haven't done a battery reboot. However I only got the car on Saturday and the dealer did one while I was there as there was an issue with seat calibration. I sorted that though with a relearn. When I bought the car I put in probably 60 litres of fuel and that filled it. The tank was reading half full before this and I'm sure it read full after. I remeber thinking it must be a hell of a big tank but didn't give it another thought. It was a 425mile trip home so topped up about half way home. That was the last time I'd filled up. Today I left the house got about half a mile along the road with the gauge reading around half full and a range of 97 miles. Spluttered to a halt and after a top up runnig fine. Although the gauge is incorrect. As I now assume it was from the day I got it. So whats the fix? Taking it tonthe supplying dealer isn't an option. I do have a 3rd party warranty but I'd like to know what the fault is to save on messing about.

60 liters is 15.8 gallons so that sounds about right for a full tank. I still stand by my above post. You'll need to figure out what the fuel level sensors are telling the gauge to read. Have you found the manual? Really good read and it goes in depth about the tank.

Is there a dealer near you. If so I would call the dealer you bought it from and tell them about the problem which they failed to tell you about and have them call the nearest dealer to you. Tell them you expect them to cover the fix . Other then that you either need to go through the manual as Ranch mentioned or take it to your independent mechanic.

There is a main Dealer near me. I did speak to the place I purchased the car. But there suggestion was just to use the supplied warranty. Is there a way of reading what the sensors are saying? Without dismantling the whole car preferably. I haven't found an online manual yet.

Workshop manual is on this site as free download.

There are a lot of sensors - some readable via OBD the rest need specialist tool (DIY if you want to buy...).

Have a look at this post and watch the video I made. One of the tests (at 0:51) displays the signals for the fuel system.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...4/#post1115929

Not sure exactly what they mean but the displayed metrics are apparently:

FUEL SYSTEM.
RAW X LH X RH.
FILTERED X LH X RH.
PERCENT X LH

As you can see in my video the PERCENT value matches what the gauge is showing.

This is a slightly clearer later one I shot showing the same info (at 0:36)

Thanks I'll look at that. One thing to clarify. Does the sender come as part of the tank?

Weird, I just click on the green download icon and Windows / Chrome automatically downloads it. The site jumps to some click bait but the file downloads correctly. The pop up confused me a lot in the beginning too. Check your downloaded files and see if it's there.

If not, same info, just a different source.
