Okay then, I will change from They will not charge a battery to They will not charge a battery in a timely and efficient matter. I will keep the USE A REAL CHARGER INSTEAD on the table. Of course anything CAN charge a battery given enough time, but most people won't WANT to wait the several weeks necessary to get the job done correctly.
Wouldn't a 96AH battery take less than 24 hours to charge (96/5=19.2)? That doesn't sound excessive and I wouldn't try charging a totally flat battery anyway so I don't see what the issue is.
I think I'm getting closer to a diagnosis. I have found a connector under the nav box and it has what I take to be a MOST loop attached. From this I have deduced that in the past something has gone wrong with the navigator which stops the MOST bus working, hence the loop. I'd like to prove this by reattaching the plug to the navigator but can't figure out how to disconnect the loop. I can't find a latch. Sorry to be a pest but can anyone enlighten me? MOST loop at navigator

The male side (original cable) has a tab on the end, just squeeze and pull. I can see it in your pic, the tab is blocking out some of the white tape in the image. Also, when you plug in, it only fits one way so no need to force it, just spin it around if you find it's not snapping right in.
Well this is very interesting. Having followed Sean's advice I plugged the MOST connector into the Nav box and, lo and behold, the box started whirring. Having tried a couple of discs which came with the car and given the box a sharp tap, the unit took in the disc and once having touched the navigation button on the screen it all seemed to work. I have had a little play around to try to familiarise myself with the navigator and I think I am beginning to understand how to use it. I'll be making a trip over the weekend and hope to see if it's giving me instructions which don't end up in an impasse. Now to get some up to date maps and sort out the airbag light.
Thanks to all who have helped and especially Sean W.
Mike great news! The car came with a separate Navigation Booklet that accompanied the owners manual. I hope you have that, as it's helpful guidance and I don't see a copy online. It will help out with calibration. Perhaps someone online here in the group has one to upload.
You should certainly know more when you get on the road. A piece of advice though for what it's worth. Keep the bypass loop in your glovebox in case something goes awry on your drive. The MOST Network is a loop that impacts, Phone, Sound system, Satellite Radio, Touchscreen Display, and of course Navigation.
Chances are good that the previous owner just found the Nav system archaic and looped it out, but if something did go wrong, other functions I listed can fail, at which point you can just reinstall the loop.
Some thoughts on the maps, I believe in Europe you can get updated ones (can't here in the US past 2016 Volvo version). If you live and travel in areas that seldom have expanding construction, you might just be happy with your version.
Also please close this thread out when you get back and ask the Admin to mark the thread RESOLVED. It helps others in the future.
Yes Sean, I found some update discs for 2019-2020 on ebay and have one on order. There's continuous change of the road network round here and even Garmin can't keep up so we know to check with signage too although that is often poor. I found a Navigation system booklet on line and have downloaded it. Unfortunately I can't remember where from but a Google search should find it. If not I'm happy to upload it somewhere, just let me know. It's 62pp so I'm thinking about having it printed and bound in a print shop rather than a DIY job but I think it would be useful to have in the car in the early days at least.
I do appreciate your help in guiding me though this.
BTW the topic is not yet complete as next week I'm taking the car to someone who can read the fault codes and hopefully reset the airbag light. I'll close the thread with a report then.
Can I suggest that you start an entirely new thread on the airbag once you get the codes? This thread side tracked a bit on battery discussion but it's easier for users to not have to sift through, the nav part for example to get to the codes on the airbag. It's just preferred by most to use one thread per issue, but your choice. Enjoy your trip.
