Default Anyone Doing Oil Change Intervals Longer than 1-Year?

Changed the oil in my 2010 5.0L XKR September of last year and reset the service counter at the same time. I've only driven about 1000kms since then, and the 'service required' message is coming on at startup; I figure it's because I am closing in on the 1-year mark. Seems really wasteful to change the oil again only 1000kms later and I can't imagine the oil (Penzoil Ultra) in the car has degraded much over the last year, so I am thinking about stretching the interval out and doing it in the spring instead. Anyone else do an 18 or 24 month oil change interval, I am sure I am not the only one here to do very little annual kms.

Hey Firm. It would be great if you kept the discussion in this thread because there's no way anyone's going to find the info you're looking for in the link below, but there are opinions to be sure. For me, it's not just miles but age. The thread title doesn't correlate but someone asked a similar question near the bottom of page 1. I hope it helps.

Our Jag only gets about 2500 miles per year so also pretty low. I have always prescribed to the 1 year change, although one year I got to it a month late, not worried one bit the delay!

In the end it is the most minor cost of owning any car, so never really thought it worth the savings. However, oil has a shelf life of 5 years, at least that is what the all-knowing-google tells me, and that can never be wrong. So if I go with that, if you have a car that you changed the oil and NEVER drove it, can the oil last 5 years? This makes me curious.

But I will still change my oil every year.

I bought mine feb 2019 and just had oil changed last week had about 8000kilos on it. I think people worry two much . If I had 2500 miles I would leave it for two years before changing
When i was a kid had a 74 firebird that would get noisy when oil was a little low and i would just add at that point. Car is still probably running now. I would be more worried about timing, plugs and tranny fluid.

IMHO it depends very much on your driving pattern.
I do only around 4,000 miles per annum but I change the oil every six months.
I do this mainly because around 50% of my miles are very short trips of no more than 1 or 2 miles (to the shops and back) where the engine doesn't even get to full operating temp, and of the remaining 50% most are trips of around 10 miles. These days I very rarely do a longer trip of 100 miles +.
From my reading and research all these short trips are very bad for the oil and cause it to degrade much much faster than "normal".
Most of the JLR documents I have read say that oil change intervals should be halved in conditions of "severe use" and I class my usage pattern as "severe" (on the oil that is!). There are also plenty of threads and posts around here in the XK, XJ, XF and F-Type sections claiming that the AJ133 both NA and SC is prone to "oil sludge" which in turn is a major cause of the common timing chain problems which can lead to catastrophic engine failure and huge repair bills.
So I consider six monthly oil changes as cheap insurance, and they are quick and easy to do with a vacuum pump.

This is exactly my situation, very short and frequent trips. Mostly at heavy throttle as my 13.8 miles per gallon will attest. The Wife is a bit more gentle. My longest is when I go to my alternate gym 6 miles away.

Again, oil change is such a small part of cost of ownership, really the time spent typing in this thread has cost me more money

Look at your oil u can tell if it needs changing. I am a little older but still know good from bad. Back in the day there would be so much loose rings oil would be dark after 500 miles, not the case today

Easy enough in your model/year.
Just screw the oil filter canister off and there is plenty of oil sitting in the mount area which you can extract with a syringe.
That said, these days dark/black oil doesn't mean that the oil needs changing, it means the oil is doing part of it's job by trapping carbon deposits.

I drove my Jag from first of May to the End of October in Austria around 4000km every year and I do the Oil Change every 2 Years.
I personally think the every year Change is not necessary.
I always drive long distances around 150 - 300km at one ride.
I have talked with many mechanics from different Brands and the lot of they says, that the year oil change unnecessary is in Austria.
Temperatures around in Summer 30°C and a few weeks.

This is bad idea as oil degrades with time and mileage. Also, oil change is cheap but engine out work is expensive. If you are long-term owner, skimping on oil changes is unwise.

Every 18 months for me as I only put 750 miles/year on the car. And I keep it in an insulated garage.

See, already this is more work than I find worth the effort!

But good to know.

Slightly off-topic, but can/do you drain the oil cooler when doing an oil change, or is it such a negligible amount it's not worth doing?
I haven't yet been under the car, and the oil in the cooler may well drain on it's own, but I thought I'd ask anyway..
