Apple Car Play / Android Auto using stock display and controls!
Wow, you really have to strip the head unit down to use the Mr 12V solution.
I think this is sufficient for my purposes, which is to stream digital audio through the infotainment system. I use it to decent effect in my 2008 Audi A6.

it's not that big a job to do if you are half competent with electronics
Does anyone know if the stock headunit is 'mated' to the car?
I am looking at the Tesla type screen as there are some good deals currently and wondered if I could fit my Mr12Volt adapted unit into my friends XKR?
I will probably give it a go anyway but wondered if anyone knew for sure?

Powelld91, I believe for your 2010 XKR, that device will only allow playing of digital audio files stored on your Apple device. It does not allow streaming of YouTube Music or Spotify, etc. Same goes for the factory installed USB port in the console. At least that's how it works in my 2009. To truly stream, you need to either get a Mr12Volt or enable AUX and get a Bluetooth adapter.
Just to put an end to my little adventure, (white screen after 2 months of Mr12Volt, see below) I got the car out of storage and first I bought a unit from an XF, transfered the Mr12V and... black screen! I can guess the XF units, though physically the same may need software flashing. Then, I learned that the blue goop on the boards is actually a protective layer some pcb manufacturers use and it's no harm to remove it. I cleaned the boards thoroughly with IPA and a toothbrush and re-installed the Mr12Volt back in the XK OEM unit. By this (third) time I've become an expert - no instructions needed any more! Back in the car and ...voilà! OEM screen AND CarPlay in all of it's glory!
I can only assume one of the ribbons may have been loosely connected the first time and after some vibrations came off.

Yes i expect by the 3rd time I would be an expert too 🤣
why did you need an XF unit? Was yours an older XK without the AUX?

Funny anecdote...the only song I had in Apple Music was The Black Eyed Peas "Hey Mama". I got tired of that song pretty quickly.
I stumbled onto a Mr12Volt on eBay and it was so cheap I took a chance. My XK is a US 2009 so not perfect for this but I am a glutton for punishment…when it arrived it was unopened and complete. I watched the install video several times, found that my screen was too old, wrong size cable. I found an inexpensive XF screen, got a friend to update it to the XK and did the install today. My car was equipped with factory usb. It’s a convertible, so it’s not fun getting to the usb module to install the most loop as it’s behind the pump for the top which has lots of insulation around it. I struggled for awhile getting the most connector to separate and install the loop…that part of the video was 15 seconds…took me about an hour. Once the screen parts were installed, the rest was pretty easy. As Sean W said, the home button doesn’t work with CarPlay but works fine with the OEM screen. I learned to select iPod to get to CarPlay…when I want the OEM screen I hit the source button once. My rear camera is enabled as OEM and doesn’t work with CarPlay. When I shift into reverse I need to hit the source button for the camera to work. None of these things are a big deal to me. On the upside, the CarPlay works great, sounds really good, screen touch is more responsive than I expected. It’s different than a modern screen so there’s a learning curve. The usb will charge my phone and play music on a flash drive. Overall, I’m pleased with the result…hoping for an update that will correct the home button…did I mention it was really cheap?
It’s $469.00 on the Mr12Volt site. If you message Liam Biggs, he’ll give you a discount code. I got mine from an eBay bulk reseller. He told me it came to him in a lot of items from an electronics store that went out of business. It was unopened and complete in the original packaging. I offered $199.00 and he accepted. I have no warranty but it’s working well, very happy with it.

I got mine as an earlybird deal one of the first to install it, I got it for I think about 30% off but yours was a true bargain, a risk but one that paid off!
I learned today that the Car Scanner app supports CarPlay. The free version allows you to monitor lots of information…I chose coolant temperature and battery voltage to start…CarPlay doesn’t support gauges but at least you can see what it’s doing and the music continues to play when you switch to it…
can I ask what obd reader you’re using with Car Scanner? - I tried one of those cheapy ELM units I had knocking around and can’t get it to connect.
thanks in advance

Like you I tried a cheap one that works in my Golf R and it wouldn't work in the XKR, actually scarily the car wouldn't start with it plugged in 😬

I’ll take a look at that app. Downloaded another one yesterday called OnTrack with alerts that’s CarPlay compatible.
I MUST find a way to monitor my temp/voltage 😂
thanks both for your help.

But now, if anyone needs Mr12Volt installation in Boston area... PM me

BTW I’m using a Vgate icar pro as well with CarScanner, also CarPlay compatible. I have a custom dashboard in CarScanner with audible alert if Coolant Temp goes above 110°C (230°F) (about 10° earlier than the Amber Warning at 118°C (244°F), and a Shortcut to start the app when CarPlay connects. So, it runs basically in the background and if things get hot, my phone rings an alarm in my pocket or in the custom phone(cup)holder! This setup made my Arduino gauge obsolete within a week!
I did a Coolant system overhaul at 60k miles last year, so hopefully I will never hear the alarm but better safe than sorry!
