Exactly. I guess Stuart has the weekend now to drive around and hopefully close out the thread.

Bad news guys

All was going well, I had completed around 60 miles over a couple of days when the engine management light returned. The engine did not stop running until I arrived at my destination and I switched it off. I came back to the car around an hour later and it started straight away the engine management light was still on and the car drove fine all the way home (10 miles)

Engine will not start now

SDD reports these related codes

U0155-00 FACP 151,199mi Lost communication with instrument cluster control module
U0155-00 RFA 151,163mi Lost communication with instrument cluster control module
B115B-13 BCM 151,163mi Driver's seat heater

The recommendations are to run a pinpoint test

I now have purchased some pin test probes to use with my multimeter so will be able to run this test.

If your reading this Sean it says to start with check IP031 pin 1 & pin 2 (is the resistance between 100 Ohm -130 Ohm) This was roughly where we left it when I got that auto electrician round and he wrongly diagnosed the ECM.

Regarding the engine ground that I thought was my problem
I still believe that the ignition sparking problem was that ground connection and this engine management light is a different issue. If you recall in my earlier posts that fault code U0155-00 came up on many occasions.

Will report back tomorrow

The next time I tried car it wouldnt start

That seems to be an almost permanent code on my '10 XKR so I actually assumed that it was caused as part of the trouble code scan by SDD.

Hi Sean,
I used the car last week and covered around a 100 miles in one trip. I had cleared the engine management light and all seemed well unfortunately the light returned. The next morning I plugged in sdd and got these results.

The catalyst efficiency dtc had come up before so I did some research and decided to purchase a product called Cataclean. That was the reason for the 100 mile run last week hoping that this product would clean the cats and the light would not return. I had an idea that the old engine had probably deposited a lot of unburnt fuel on the cats as the old engine had very low compression on the back 2 cylinders caused by the timing chains jumping.
So I decided to take one of the cats off the car to see if it really was blocked. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked down the tube, the front of the cat had totally collapsed.
This is what I tipped out of the Cat.

No wonder the engine was hard to start!!

When I replaced the engine I only needed to removed one cat as this was enough to allow the exhausts to be disconnected from the engine. I didn't even think of looking down the cat I had removed to see what the condition it was in.

Having now found out the ridiculous cost of replacing the Cats, I have sort the help of an exhaust specialist. He is prepared to use the original cats from the XK8 car that the replacement engine came from.

He intends to cut the ends off them and make a jig to hold the X150 cats while he cuts the damaged section out and then welds the xk8 donor cat in place.

X150 Cat

I will post pictures of the modified sections when completed.

Quick Update
Unfortunately the chap who said he could make use of the original xk8 cats, when it came to it let me down after several visits to his workshop. After talking with an another Exhaust specialist I was persuaded to have a custom made set of high flow cats fitted.
The job was completed a couple of weeks ago and I have now driven the car for around 150 miles. The power difference is unbelievable, I'm really pleased with the end result and the exhaust note is fantastic, especially when you boot it

Today the EML came back again checked it on SDD code was PO158 Heated exhaust gas oxygen sensor- circuit high voltage (Bank 2 sensor 2) so not out of the woods yet. I managed to get the car on a hoist today and take some pics of the cats, one thing I noticed was the way they had attached one of the sensors into the exhaust. pipe.
(Bit strange) Anyway I have contacted the Exhaust company today and will have to return the car. Will post the outcome in the future.

Agreed on the strange attachment. The sensor needs to be in the stream, that one is not, and probably wont work, possibly the root of your check engine light.

Agreed reef
Just checked which Bank is No2 and that is the one with the strange downstream sensor position. I wonder why they did that?

Agree on the O2 sensor placement and hopefully it solves your problem but I'm baffled as to how the codes at the start of this thread are related to clogged Cats.

Hi Sean,
I'm as baffled as you. (we've gone a long way on this one)
I think the main problem was the bad ground and the failing ECM combined. The old ECM must have destroyed the cats through the misfires. I feel sure once the exhaust specialist change the position of that sensor that will be it.

Perhaps its time for one of the moderators to change the post title to something more subtle. How about Fun and games with an XK
