I haven't done it in my Jag but I have ridden the course (not raced) on a motorcycle years ago. That is a very cool race and exciting to watch as well.

Boy, that sounds like fun. I'm marking my calendar for next year. The question is which car do I take? I think the Pantera would be my choice just for the fun of it. Of course, in 118 miles, I might have to stop for gas three times.

The Pantera is gorgeous. My buddy's Dad had one of those back in the day. He had a yellow line painted on the garage floor around the car and us kids were not allowed to cross it. But we could stand there and drool

Gray XK,
Truth is that ever since I got my 2002 XKR about 4 or 5 years ago, I haven't driven the Pantera more than about 10 miles except for several trips to the track at Audi Club track events. You have to plan your driving around how hot it is, how much traffic there will be, what kind of driveways you'll have to climb over, etc...With the Jag, you just get in, drive, and have a good time. No worries. Even though I've done the cooling system upgrades, it still wants to overheat if any of the previously mentioned conditions exist. On the track, however, it will run all day long in 100F heat at 180F, "cool as a cucumber." I guess it just loves to go fast! I just can't bear the thought of selling it. The design is so timeless, it looks contemporary even today (and certainly better than a whole host of supercars). At the Audi meets, parked next to R-8s, it still gets the most attention.

And I believe I'll have a 2010 XKR with a number of modifications for the track coming in the next few weeks. I'll probably drive the Pantera even less, if that's possible, when that happens.

Well, overheating or not, it's still stunning to look at. I still remember running out to the garage to ogle the thing every time I went over to my friend's house, even though it was 30 some odd years ago. I never even got to ride in the damned thing - his dad was kind of a pr*ck lol

Anytime you're in Southern Cal, let me know and you can take it out for a day or two. The old cat might appreciate being driven around. Prior to the Fluidyne radiator, it would overheat almost immediately, but actually now, so long as your not stuck in traffic for a half hour or the temperature is not in the 90-100 range, it's actually not too bad. It's just not the kind of vehicle you want to crawl around in during rush hour traffic in L.A. But, you're welcome, anytime. And the roar of that engine six inches behind your right ear is all the "music" you'll ever want to listen to. If you are as tall as I am (6'-2") or taller, you will have to fold yourself into a pretzel to get in, but once there, it's not too bad (unless you're wearing a helmet for racing, all of the pictures of me in the car at the track, show my head at a 45 degree angle).

Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately, I'm 6'4. Does it have a sunroof I can stick my head out of?

If you get a chance to do the race in Big Bend, do it. It would be a blast no matter what car you bring. We rode out to Terlingua years ago and on a whim, we decided to do the course on our motorcycles. Fortunately, we didn't get busted until after we were done and heading home to Austin. The Sanderson PD is something else. It was the first time I've ever seen a cop with one of those 10 gallon hats. It was worth every penny of the fine

There are some 6'-4" Pantera owners, but typically they have done a lowered floor pan mod that gains about 2" in height, not enough to drive comfortably with a helmet but okay for "everyday" driving so long as you don't go over an unexpected bump that shoves your head into the roof. We need a "Dan Gurney" bubble like on the GT40. I usually drive it without my right shoe on, as well, since my size 14w covers the gas and clutch pedal. Offer is still open anytime you want to feel like a sardine.
