Default Brake job techniques

So I'm gearing up to install new brake pads on the XK. The AllData procedure advises a coat of "anti-seize" high heat lubricant to the back of the pads as well as the metal on metal moving parts.

My past practise has been to apply "Squeal Silencer" a tacky non-slip adhesive product to the back of the pads. It dries to a rubbery silicone like texture and has always worked well for me.

What do you think people? Squeal Silencer or anti-seize?

So I got the rear brake pads on and I did it the way AllData said, using high temp anti seize. All went well.

Curiously, when I went to bleed the brakes using my vacuum brake bleed kit, It would not work on the one wheel. I had to get the wife to pump the brakes manually to finish off that RR corner.

Anybody have a clue as to what was going on?

Only thing I can think of is that you opened the RR bleeder a little too much and your vacuum went to the atmosphere.
Didn't notice any drop in pressure here in Seattle!!!
If it were an older Jag. I'd say check the flex hose but doubt it for a 2007.
Wife's can be very useful, what.
I agree with you my 2007 Coupe (Radiant) is truly Gorgeous especially it's ****; and the best Jag I have ever driven owned in 60 years!!

Tarheal,
Forgot to ask; did you have any problem disconnecting the parking brake linkage/cable?
Also which brand of brake pads did you use?
I've always found that the wife works better than the silly vacuum pump!
A friend of mine says that on his XJS fleet(yes, 3) if you turn on the ignition,
the ABS system pumps the fluid for you!!
Sounds too good to be true! might try it later this year on the XK8, XK and my Acura.
I do have an AllData account too..............
Cheers, Adrian

You don't have to disconnect any linkage, merely turn off the emergency brake. As a last step, disconnect the batt. gnd. cable and reconnect. The car then goes thru its "emergency brake cal. procedure".

Used Wearever Gold from Advance Auto for $34.99. Rear only. They appear to be the same composition as the old pads which were stock Jaguar. They are labeled semi-metallic "or" ceramic. Go figure.

FWIW the rear pistons retract clockwise. I went into the job with it in my mind that retraction was counter clockwise.

I'll have to try that ABS trick when I do the fronts in 15 or 20 thousand miles. They are Wearever Gold too but they cost $56.99.

My prayer is that they produce less dust than the stock Jag pads which are just awful.

Thanks,
Technically they are correct it's one or the other!! Right hand thread, got it.
I just bought a brake tool set for the rear calipers.............from Harbor Freight.
Hope you are right about the dust................please let us know.
The factory pads are stamped JUID 31066; but not available...........anywhere!

Happy Braking.........Adrian

Talking

As a follow up to this post the installation of new rear pads has solved the excessive brake dust problem on the rear wheels. One of these days I'll get around to the fronts.
Way to go Advance Auto and Wearever Gold.
