My 2006 4.2 Convertible (113k miles) just scraped through its MOT on emissions (everything else is pretty much A1 on the car as it has been scrupulously maintained). Given that the cost for replacement Jaguar OEM is just ridiculous, and that the car itself is well worth keeping I just wondered what others on here had/have done faced with the same conundrum ?
I think spark plugs are changed at 100K. Did you?
Run CAT cleaners thru the engine?
Sell it in a different state?
I tried cat cleaner before... first time it worked for just over a year, second, third and fourth attempts were zero effect. I even removed the problem converter and scrubbed it with all the recommended cleaners directly through the media... flow was fantastic, but it didn't help the efficiency one single bit. I did get a knock-off cat for my kid's 4.2 /R, it works okay but it's pretty cheesy. Like $420 from Rock Auto.
Dude lives in England, hard to change states.
Hi,
I used the Cata clean before and it got me maybe another year, and then it didn't work anymore. I just installed Davico Cats, from Rock Auto, install was pretty easy, a lot cheaper than stock and a lot louder too.

Wait another 20 years when MOT will no longer be required? Most aftermarket products aren't the best. I'd search breakers or some UK suppliers of aftermarket exhausts, like Paramount, Spires, Swallows, Tom Lenthall https://www.tomlenthall.co.uk/ etc
On another note, there is a shop near me that repairs converters. They cut them open and replace the catalyst and then weld them back together. I can't rightly remember the price, but it was under $500 a piece, which is WAY cheaper than OEM ones. Bonus is they will definitely fit right.
In case you fit others and want them to last, are the fuel trims good or could they have caused the problem?
MoT doesn't exactly test trims (as I guess you know), though it sort of does.
Not directed to me, but I'll reply anyway...
My cat fail was only on the left bank, and it was directly caused by raw fuel being dumped down one cylinder due to one high pressure direct injector failing in the open position. The shop that did the fix told me it was inevitable, and it did fail within six months. The other bank is still wonderful because No Raw Gas Flood.
Trims MAY play a factor, but those are usually adjusted for anomalies in the system and 'corrected' to what they SHOULD be out the exhaust. 14.7:1 ratio and all that stuff.
Same thing happened to me on my 2014 XJR. Injector failure flooded the engine and cats. Got that fixed and then had Cat efficiency code on one side of the engine. Fought it for several months with Cataclean and various O2 spacers and/or mini cats. No change and finally I had to replace that side catalytic converter. As you know cats are real expensive from Jaguar.
Do follow luv2fly thread links as there is an amazing cheap catalytic converter vendor on EBay with what looks to be a very high quality part for a very low price. So GIANT red flag right there!
Still take a look and it might not work since your in the UK but for $140 for a PAIR of cats it just too cheap to NOT look into!
Here are all the Jaguar cats he offers. Jaguar Catalytic Converters
But the fabrication and weld quality at least in the pictures are top notch!
Now the question is are they any good? How long will they last?
Has anybody installed them?
They claim to met the EPA standards too. No mention of the cell count and I have found the best OEM ones are usually 400 cell count. The sport cats are usually 200 cell count and may or may not pass emissions.
Davico also makes after market cats and those are about $500 per side and on Rock Auto.
Hey they carry one for you 2006 XK and it's under $300! 2006 XK Cat Converter
Since your in the UK I don't know if these suppliers will work for you or not?

I think they are made in Poland. At least I've seen some being sold on Polish webshops. The price indicates there is very little precious metals inside = low efficiency. But if it works for a year or two, it's still cheaper to replace the regularly, than to buy OEM.
You just have to hold on long enough, until the X150 becomes a classic and is exempt of Smog testing.

97% Approval rating on eBay is abysmal. Spend up and buy quality.

There are none for XK on that page though, just the higher sales vehicles.
I've used NOMA parts from ebay and I have had good luck. I"ve spoken with them several times and they take care disassembling the cars. I recommend them.
