Default Convertible Top Use Question

Hi Guys:

My 2012 XKR has ultra-low mileage and my dealer said I should take it out at least once per week to keep everything lubricated and running smoothly. No problem with that.

I bow to you guys experience as to whether the convertible top should also be lowered/raised weekly, to keep the mechanism running smoothly or can I leave the top down for weeks at a time, with no detrimental effect on the fabric or the mechanism? I should add that I never take it out in the rain!

Thank you for your input.

Roger

Hi,
I have had my 2006 XK Convertible for about 5 years, and as I live in a temperate climate I put the top down as often as I can so it doesn't need exercising.
I always put it up when it's in the garage as I read somewhere that this was better to keep it stretched and if wet, allowed it to dry evenly and quickly?, but as we have cats it also stops them from sleeping in the car!
Most of all it is important to use the car and enjoy it, top down as often as you can.

Leave it up for storage. Leaving the top down for long periods sets the creases. Not good for the top

I drive my 07 XKR weekly. It sounds better and drives more smoothly. Good for the car and owner. I keep top open to drive, down in the garage. Use 303 clean and protect. Still looks new.
Also have an XK8. Didn't know better so top always down for the first 2 years. Now, when up, the creases are noticeable. Using 303 clean and protect means I'll get a little life but made the creases even more noticeable.
I look at the ultra low mileage cars on BAT. Some basically undriven for years. Many possible problems. I'd rather own a low (or reasonable) mileage car that's been driven regularly and well maintained.

When I had my top replaced I was advised to put the top up when in the garage…top down puts stress on the rear window that causes failure of the glass seal.
