Default Dealer add-ons... road hazard protection

I'm purchasing a new XKR-S tomorrow and the dealer is trying to sell me some add-ons. This includes things like Lo Jack, dent removal, etc. The one add-on that is of interest to me is road hazard. Its a 5 year program that covers the wheels and tire if damaged. The cost is $985. Question, how susceptible are the Jag rims (and tires) to road hazards? I was offered this when I purchased my Range Rover. Unfortunately I declined and now I have to repair all 4 of my rims due to curb scuffs. The RR rims are 22" so they are really susceptible to this kind of damage plus its my daily driver. I suspect I wont have the same issue with the Jag but I'm curious to hear what others have experienced.

I appreciate any input. I'll be sure to post pics on my new baby...

Is this something that might be covered under the 'comp and collision' provisions of your regular insurance? Just wondering.

FWIW in 120k miles I've had two alloy wheels bent due to hitting 'things' in the road (once a rock the size of a softball; once a pothole).

Cost $80 each to have them repaired at an alloy wheel repair specialist. Had to replace the tires, too.

If a wheel is damaged beyond repair I wouldn't be surprised if new replacements were several hundred dollars each.

Others will chime in.

Cheers
DD

Repairing the road rash on my Range Rover rims ran $160 a rim. The dealership says the OEM rims cost around $3K a set. I suspect I should probably just pass. If the cost was $500 it would make more sense to do it.

I bought mine with 31000 miles in great shape but the rims had some curb damage it was $200.00 apiece to completely redo the wheels. They came out like new but in Michigan with potholes insurance at $985 sounds good. P.S. 20 inch rims on the Portfolio about $1,200.00 new

Extra add on for the wheels and tires are most likely NOT WORTH the expense.

There are several vendors that will do wheel exchanges on Jaguar wheels. These would be refurbished/refinished wheels brought back to like new condition.

You purchase the refurbished/refinished wheels...about $800 to $900 per set, get your tires mounted on the new wheels, then send your wheels back to the vendor, which are considered "core wheels". The vendor then refurbishes/refinishes these and have them available to send to the next purchaser.

When purchasing the wheels, you are charged a "core" fee, usually $3000 then once you ship the your "rim rash" wheels back, you get your deposit back.

It's a simple process, you just have to take a few steps. There are several vendors that will refinish your wheels also. You just have the down time getting this process completed.

Read the fine print of the warranty BEFORE you sign. I'll bet there are limits for things like curb rash, total dollar limits and there may be deductibles. Remember, everyone is in this to make money.

The tyres don't project very far from the rims, and offer almost no protection. Unless you only ever park in open lots and never against the kerb, you're pretty likely to scuff the rims. However, nearly a thousand bucks sounds pretty expensive - far too much for just scuff repairs.

Bought my car used two years ago with 34K miles and the rims were in good shape. Since then I've managed to road rash all of them and they are all "slightly bent."

I got a quote from a local shop of $800 to straighten and refurb all four to factory new and balance and remount all. Yes the downside is that they want the car for a week.

Since I have 20s, I always add life of tire 100% road hazard warranty. For the few extra bucks I feel it's worth it.

A $985 add on for the wheels would not be a value to me.

Best regards,

I was at my dealer last week and there was a mobile wheel repair guy there from "Alloy Wheel Repair Specialist." I have slight curb rash on 3 wheels and pretty bad on the 4th. He quoted me $100 per wheel to fix rash and repaint all wheels and he could do it in a day. I'm sure he is not going to remove the tires and check for bent rims for that price. My dealer said he does good work and if I didn't plan on keeping the car for a long time I would probably go that route.

If I do plan to keep it I would take it to a wheel specialist that I got a quote from for $1000 for the 4 wheels. However he would remove tires, straighten if needed, sandblast down to bare metal, and paint with 2 coats and one coat of clear. I would have to leave it for 3-4 days.

If you want the cheaper fix the mobile company has a guy near Atlanta.

Funny how nail punctures are quite common on cars with road hazard warranties... Dealer seems to find cracks in the wheel the untrained naked eye can't...

Not trying to jack the OP's post...

There is a huge difference with cosmetically repairing road rash and refurbishing the entire wheel. The cosmetic repair will be noticeable.

Discount Tire offered me mobile service and also refurbished exchange wheels. The price difference was negligible. I opted out of mobile because it was cosmetic and out of refurb exchange because I had no idea who did the wheel work.

To the OP's original question...you can get all four wheels brought back to brand new factory look and spec locally in Atlanta from a shop whose owner is on site... for about a grand.

Best to all,

Doesn't the OP state that the insurance covers the tires as well? I don't know the specifics, but every time I get a flat tire (thankfully not in the Jag yet) there is some sort of sidewall damage that is not covered by the tires warranty. Since these tires are at least 400 bucks apiece... But then again you have to have three ruptures to make that price attractive, so I don't know.
