Engine Overheating Warning
Just thought I would share today's experience with you all.
Into my jouney about 10 miles and the heating went cold, then up flashed the engine overheating warning message. In traffic, car went into first gear and started to struggle, then it cut out. I had no option but to put it into Park and hand brake on, then start button, coupled with the brake/accel got it going, it cut out again and again (had no option to do this believe me). Anyway mounted the pavement, checked the collant levels and they were depleated. Orange recovery man came, poured loads of fluid in and it just kept vanishing.
Turns out I have a leak at the rear of the engine, its roughly in the middle of the block, suspect core plug, split connector or split fluid line somewhere. Possible a new Thermostat too...
Fingers crossed it won't be an arm and a leg. Need to work out how to get it to the local Jag dealer (Solihull). Fingers crossed they have a collection on flatbed service.
It did surprise me though that the engine cut out in low gear though, is there a safety cut out built programmed in?

It sounds as if you might have the dreaded water pump failure. There are several threads on this forum dealing with it. Check out XK150 overheating. Good luck and keep us apprised of your progress.
As Ralph stated, water pump failures are common with the XK/R models. However, if that would be tha case the leak would be at the front of the engine. Hopefully it is a engine block plug and, hopefully the engine is not damaged by the overheating issues.
Wish you luck, please let us know the cause when you find out.

Damn. It's never good to hear about problems like this. You have a 2006 with the 4.2 engine unless your signature is out dated. The known water pump defect is with the 5L engine and as Albert mentioned above your leak is in the back of the engine. Keep us updated. I hope it's a simple plug and your engine is fine. Your engine should be ok if you didn't have the engine running long after the warning light came on.
Seems to me that loss of cabin heat is an immediate result of coolant loss when there is insufficient coolant to heat the heater core.
I suspect you might have a thermostat that is stuck closed. I have not experienced this with my Jaguar, but have with a motorcycle. An easy roadside diagnosis is to simply compare radiant heat from the motor and the radiator. Just holding your hand one half inch from the subject is enough for a rough comparison. If the radiator is obviously cooler, then a stuck thermostat may be the culprit.

Work carried out and have my motor back now.
Turned out to be a leaking hose behind the inlet manifold. less than £20 for the parts but then nearly £400 for the Jaguar labour costs...(around 3 hours).

The labour cost and time seem a bit much; however, you have your car back and your engine is good.

I've just experienced the same problem car cutting out, had to get back on the back of a recovery truck. I did notice that the heater wasn't working, it was coming out cold. Which jag dealer did you go to as I don't want to go there (I live nearby) if they charge you that much
I used Jag Solihull, i'm guessing you've poured collant/water through and observed any leak? In some ways I was lucky as it was just a pipe carrying collant rather than a pump or anything, which would have been far more expensive.
Theres a good Jag indy garage down Longbridge if you want to steer clear of Jag labour prices.

thanks for the info, the expansion tank was empty so i filled it up but could see water pouring out onto floor .Cant exactly see where its coming from so tried to take off radiator splash guard{under the front bumper} but lying on my back in the rain was no fun so will wait for my local garage to open
