engine reliable?

In my experience engine has been very reliable. No misfires, smooth power delivery, everything. Car was bought brand new in '07 no engine or mechanical problems at all. Currently sitting on 40,000 fat miles with extended warranty.
Electrical issues are what you should worry about. I've already given up on Jaguar's "keyless start." It doesn't work for me, luckily there is a failsafe spot to put your key (kind of like the newer Audis).

Just bought a pre-owned 08 that just turned 36K miles. So far the engine feels and operates like any new high-tech multi-valve V8. Silky smooth, revs to redline and get slightly better fuel mileage than the EPA ratings.
So unless something goes horribly wrong (most likely a sub system or electrical glitch) the 4.2L V8 appears to be a rock. And knock on wood, but so far I've had no issues with the keyless start or fob functions. But my 08 has a newer battery and I plan on replacing the fob's batteries soon.

Same engine in an S model
I have a 06 S (normally aspirated) that I purchased new and now has
just turned 96,000. I average about 4K per oil change which I've always
felt is one of the keys to long life. I also run an oil analysis at each
change; the last analysis was performed at 91,000 and showed no trace
of wear metals, antifreeze, etc.
You might check the tranny cooler lines running from the tranny to the
radiator; I'm not sure if they are the same as the S model, but if they
are, they teld to leak at the metal to rubber connection.

My mechanic, in the rare instance I need one, works in a well regarded indie shop. He states the engine in the car is "bullet proof" to the point he gets a bit rusty in between having to tear one down. These cars have persistent problem areas but not engine internals. I believe the XK engines are of the same series as the XJs .
That's not to say the induction system doesn't have the occasional hick-up but I do have 61,000 trouble free miles and I'm in it for the long haul.

Just the usual key in pocket but car won't start problem. Most likely my cell phone interfering with the key. It doesn't happen too often but enough so that I've gotten in the habit of sticking the key into the fail-safe slot anyhow. Unless I'm going out with new company in which case I just leave it be and hope it starts. When it doesn't (only happened once) I just shrug and sheepishly say "it's a jag."
