Default Exposed undercarriage wire connectors

On the passenger side of my 2010 XK there is a protective tubing containing wiring that is secured along the undercarriage going from the front the car to the rear. When I had my car on a lift today, I noticed at the passenger side rear wheel well area, coming out of the protective tubing, were taped multi color wires that were then exposed and going into 2 grey connectors (approximately 10 wires per connector). The grey connectors were secured to a crossmember. On the other side of the grey connectors I saw exposed wires going back into the protective tubing towards the rear of the car. My local mechanic told me that he had seen this before on other cars. My question is, how safe can these wires be exposed to water and the elements? Does anyone know what they are and why Jaguar designed the car this way? Sorry I did not take any pictures.

Did any XK owners every notice these exposed wires and grey connectors under their cars? You can see them without putting the car on the lift by looking at the undercarriage at the front of the rear passenger side tire (looking back). It is pretty much along the inside of the rear passenger side tire secured to a crossmember. I'm going to ask Jaguar what it is and why it's there next week in service.

Looks to me to be part of the Main harness that feeds, among other things, the starter. Yes, I have a 2007 coupe and I also have it like I suspect all XK's have it. How durable? Got me. I'm not going to mess with it.

Thanks Hailers. Now at least I know someone at the factory wasn't be creative that day they connected the harness in my car! Personally, I like keeping anything electrical away from moisture. The British have their own way of doing things.
