Thanks for the interesting article Ralph.

Looks like Jaguar is really going to take the F-type on a nice ride (600hp, AWD, R, RS, GT). The XKR is reborn as an XR or stretched out F-type with more luxury.

I saw an F-Type on the highway the other day and as traffic was at a crawl, I had a good opportunity to study it. As beautiful as it was, I was surprised at just how small a car it is. I can't imagine how fast that thing would be with 600 hp.

Seems to me that Jaguar has created a bit of a dilemma for themselves in that the F-Type and the XK series are similarly priced, will appeal to the same pool of buyers (or at least significant overlap) and may force Jaguar to reinvent the XK to differentiate the two offerings. They had an absolute jewel in the XK/XKR and I don't understand why they would mess with its success.

That is exactly what they are doing. Jaguar is moving the XK upscale and much pricier. This alone could increase the value of our XK's, if getting a replacement is more like up to 200K, and XK (or XR as it may be called); or cars now have added panache.

Sounds like a reasonable roadmap to me with some exciting offerings around the bend. Next gen XJ sounds great; bring back some of the classic elements now that people are looking at Jag as a serious option beyond the loyal's.

Thanks for sharing. It's nice to have a roadmap of where the brand is going. I was sad not to hear of them producing a lower priced small roadster. Something more "fun" and less "serious" than the F-Type, with a stick! Something to compete with the Alfa Romeo 4C!

With the XR going upscale and replacing the XK. The XR should put a stop on the depreciation of the XK or slow it down a lot. The XR will be priced at some serious $s.

I don't agree with Jaguar not offering a true GT. The new XR will compete with the XFR and Jaguar will have no GT. The XK is the best GT on the road today. Jaguar should just update it. I guess Jaguar is calling the XR a GT, but I think it will compete with the XFR. Sould be interesting over the next few years to see what Jaguar rolls out.

No electric hybrid?

If they were, I'd thought it would've been in that article!

I highly doubt they would do it. Manual transmissions just aren't in Jaguar's bag of tricks these days.

+1

Sticks are history, old school. No high end cars are being offered with sticks today. Everything is about speed shifting and getting the power to the pavement quickly and effectively. Dual clutch and AWD torque vectoring.

What is it about the XR that will make it not a GT anymore? Too big? I guess it would become a touring car.

XJ pillarless coupe sounds right up my alley! If I were to replace my X350 tomorrow, I have always said it would be with another X350 or an old XJC.
As for messing with the Land Rover Defender, if they get too radical with it they will p1ss the UK farming community off (which is pretty large), as they all like it the way it is!

IMO a GT is primarily a sports car with a small back seat to keep the car looking and performing more sporty than touring. 2+2s with usable back seats for adults, I think, take away from the sport car look and place the car in a different class such as you suggest--more of a touring car.

I look at the proposed XR as a new car and not as a replacement for the XK unless the car emphasizes performance over comfort and the size keeps it looking more like a sports car and not a sedan. From what I read in the article the XR will be more luxurious (comfortable, I assume for back seat passengers) and larger than the XK. Seems like comfort and touring are being emphasized more than performance and a sports car experience.

The article makes me feel like our current generation X Kay's are a good long-term hold, inasmuch as any car can be predicted to be a good long-term hold.

It seems like the lines an overall design will be carried forward to the new upscale replacement model. This bodes well for resales IMO.

Absolutely. Give it 5 years and we'll know the answer.

I stopped by my local dealership yesterday to see 2 XK's along side of 2 F-Types. I'm not the first on this forum to say the XK's look so sweet along side of the F-Types. In fact many XK members on this forum when to the dealer to buy an F-Type and ended up with an XK because they seen the cars side-by-side. I buy cars with no loyalty to brand, only for innovation, quality, performance and uniqueness. The XK has it all and will go down as one of the greatest cars made by Jaguar, IMO.
