Default Gas tank won"t fill all the way

When I go to fill up my tank kicks off the gas pump at 7/8 full.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any known solutions?

Couple of things come to mind. How much fuel is getting in. If it within reason of how much the tank should hold, then I would think a sender issue. If it is not within reason and it really is clicking off early, then I would start looking at the EVAP system that controls the vapors coming from the tank. I don't know of many issues with those tanks/systems, but maybe someone else has seen them.

Again, new to Jag, so my advice is an educated guess at best. I think BlackC300VDP is on the mark.

Sender would be a first guess.

We had issues with our Audi A4's where the vapor return line from the tank would get kinked. It prematurely kicked off the fuel pumps while filling. It was noticeable at all fill levels though, and if you filled slowly you could top off the tank.

Default Very helpful

Thanks guys, that helps narrow it down alot.

I can usually fill fast and easy about 14 gallons (estimate 2 left in the tank) then when I get in it's a surprise to see that the indicator and range are just under the full mark and under 250 miles range.

I would estimate then that the tank is filled to 16 maybe 17 gallons out of the full 18.8.

i.e. from your help i would guess the sender unit is the probelm.

From what i see the pump and sender are one unit so I guess I'll wait til the pump craps out before changing it.

Mike V, you're definitely going to want to wait for the pump to fail. I just looked up the repair procedure from Jag and it looks like the rear subframe is dropped out of the car to let the tank come out! I have never done anything with the tank on one of them so I cannot say from experience.

Default Ouch

Thanks for the tip... Now I can live with trying to click in an extra few ounces or at least 7/8 full.

And pray that you never have to touch the fuel pumps.

But, check out the evap system anyways.

Default Topping Off the Fuel Tank

My check engine light came on around 8 months ago, at around 28K miles. To make a long story short, my service advisor explained that the fault code showed a catalytic converter, which was replaced under warranty. When I asked him how that could happen, he said it could be caused by topping off the gas tank and then parking the car on an incline or in the hot sun. Gasoline could then spill into the evaporative recovery system and damage the catalytic converter.

The Owner's Manual states, in part:
"Do not attempt to fill the tank to its maximum capacity. If the vehicle is to be parked on a slope, in direct sunlight, or high ambient temperature, expansion of the fuel could cause spillage."
"Gas station pumps are equipped with automatic cut-off sensing to avoid fuel spillage. Fill the tank slowly until the filler nozzle automatically cuts-off the supply. Do not attempt to fill the tank beyond this point."
If you keep topping off the tank, don't say you weren't warned!

Hmmmm, I have never thought of it but sounds plausible . Do not overfill your vehicles this is more budget friendly as well lol
